Excerpt:

“We’re going to put nine inches of a mixture of sand and clay on top of an eight-inch base. We can then harrow the cushion out of it and we can make it compacted enough that it’s going to sustain the weight of a horse going 40 miles per hour. This will enable us to make adjustments to the cushion as needed, depending on weather and traffic conditions.”

Last week the California Horse Racing Board deferred approving the 2011 calendar when Santa Anita and Oak Tree both bid for the same dates next fall.

Is this a surprise to anyone? Absolutely not.

The rumors have been rampant that trainers made a deal with Santa Anita owner Frank Stronach: Put in a dirt track and we’ll back your bid for more racing dates.

“Dirt for dates,” said trainer Peter Miller on more than one occasion.

It certainly looks like that is coming true.

With the impending takeout raise, i'm not sure it matters what surface they have down there.

i have wondered where the dirt is comming from. the dirt track they had prior to the cusion track was horrible......it was a speed bias joke, no trainers from the east wanted to ship any horses.....i hope its a deeper softer track.

Yes, I agree. Isn't it a shame? When it seems like one problem is fixed, they create another.

The horse people got what they said they wanted. Dirt and a takeout raise for larger purses. It will be really interesting to see if they start entering their horses now. The way they talk while they promoting these things we should never see another 5 horse field at SA. Yeah, right.

Go to the Santa Anita website and click on the "Workout Cam" and take a peek at a lovely shade of brown sandy material being layered upon the oval.

If they lowered the takeout to 10% wps and 12% exotics,
it would pay for the new track by the end of this year.

Truth. ;)

No, "Dates for Dirt" works for Match.com.

Remember the good old days when California had dirt tracks with 6 horse fields and a 20% take out on exotic bets?

They listened and responded.

Remember the recent bad days when California had synthetic tracks with 6 horse fields and a 20% take out on exotic bets?

They listened and responded.

Stay tuned.

the weight of a horse going 40 miles per hour.

Whenever I see that phrase, I wonder what Albert Einstein would have made of it.

It's a shame that Richard Shapiro missed this meeting.

9/5 the ego idiots on the CHRB stood up and took a bow. The applause was from owners and horsemen. The boo's (not any) were from bettors in the audience. Hmmmmm? No stinkn' bettors wanted at CHRB meetings, especially when they are raising the takeouts. ;)
