About 12 workers out of how many that work at that plant? I could not find an exact answer to that question, but I did learn that they recently added a second shift of 1100 workers, so I'm guessing there are over 2000 employed there. Less than 1% were involved. Furthermore it was a worker at the plant who blew the whistle. And by the way,

Excerpt:
Chrysler said it has suspended some plant workers caught by a Detroit television station drinking alcohol and smoking what appeared to be marijuana during breaks.
Another excerpt:
The United Auto Workers said in a statement to the station that it strongly opposes the use of alcohol or controlled substances on the job.

"The employees involved in this situation do not represent the vast majority of workers at Chrysler who do a great job making high quality vehicles in some of the most productive manufacturing facilities in the United States," the union said.
Of course you use the actions of a few to condemn the many.

Pretty much what the NAACP, the Congressional Black Caucus and far left Democrats are doing to the Tea Party. Except that they still haven't proven anything.

the attitude represented by those guys (who gives a rip) is the majority attitude in your typical Detroit UAW facility. I guarantee you that as they stood there toking and boozing it up, they were all bitching about the foreman and how bad they've got it because someone asked them to actually work.

I spent years in GM and Chrysler assembly plants.
Most go home more refreshed than when they came in that morning.

No comparison at all to the Honda Plant in Marysville. Not even close.
UAW workers were a joke next to those people. On every level.
UAW = Useless Auto Workers.

Geeze. First I'm told not to buy a car built on a Monday. Now I have to know if it was built before or after lunch.

Only if it's a Government Motors car.

Day after day, how many vehicles were affected on the assembly line by these "few" workers. Do not know exactly what they do at this plant but it is no excuse for this type of behavior. Peoples lives could be put at risk but then again this must be acceptable in your way of thinking.

All those "good" UAW workers there - not one of them ever saw fit to do the right thing and report this? Interesting. Solidarity before safety.

Sounds like Chrysler has little choice but to fire the offenders. The Union is compelled to grieve the action as a matter of course but will just go through the motions. It seems hard to imagine that someone in Management was not aware of the situation, how could you not smell the alcohol or the physical signs of marijuana use.

Not sure about Chrysler but most companies in their sector employ Fitness For Duty Testing that allows the company to immediately send the suspected person for medical evaluation including drug and alcohol testing.

The other problem is that some Unions have become so powerful that companies are reluctant to take disciplinary action that often results in a slap on the hand and a return to work with all lost wages plus penalties paid.

What are the tell tale physical signs of marijuana use?

Jobs (http://www.nbcbayarea.com/blogs/prop-zero?tag=), Pot (http://www.nbcbayarea.com/blogs/prop-zero?tag=), Teamsters (http://www.nbcbayarea.com/blogs/prop-zero?tag=)

Unions Spot Cash Crop in Pot

Every business is looking for new growth areas. The Teamsters apparently are no different.

One of the country’s most storied unions has signed up close to 40 new members this month by organizing the nation’s first group of unionized marijuana growers.

The new members work as gardeners and trimmers for Marjyn Investments LLC (http://www.nbcbayarea.com/topics?topic=Marjyn+Investments+LLC) out of Oakland (http://www.nbcbayarea.com/topics?topic=Oakland). The company holds contracts with medical marijuana patients to grow their pot for them.

"I didn't have this planned out when I became a Teamster 34 years ago, to organize marijuana workers," said Lou Marchetti (http://www.nbcbayarea.com/topics?topic=Lou+Marchetti), who acted as a liaison between the growers and Oakland-based Teamsters Local 70. "This is a whole new ballgame."

Along with the new two-year contract, comes a pension, paid vacation and health insurance. Wages will also jump from the current $18 per hour to $25.75 an hour within 15 months.

Marchetti told the Associated Press (http://www.nbcbayarea.com/topics?topic=The+Associated+Press) that the union would not have gotten involved with the growers if it didn't believe the business was legitimate under state law.

"The Teamsters would never organize an illegal business," he said.

Will that make the Teamsters union officals drug lords? Will they be in competition with the Mexican and South American drug lords?

My experience working as a manger in a union shop is that they will do far more than go through the motions. They will go all no matter what the offenses, and more often than not, arbitration will go to the union.
Knowing what is going on and being able to do anything about it is two different things.

The thing I did find amusing about the video is that all these Chrysler guys drove off in their FORD trucks!

I've never seen anyone reinstated after an on the job drug/alcohol incident but practices vary throughout the country.

It also depends on the contract language and of course the video evidence plus I doubt any drug testing was done. I believe Chrysler fires on Monday and I would be surprised if they get reinstated.

Don't you normally need the police to arrest someone? They may have been designated drivers, but somehow I doubt it.

Read the story. It was a worker that blew the whistle. Did he report it to management before he alerted TV news? Don't know. Perhaps he did and they ignored him. In which case management is as much to blame.

Point out to me where I said drinking or smoking marijuana is acceptable on the job behavior. My quarrel was with the presumption that because a few workers were drinking on their lunch break, all of the workers at that plant should be condemned. And, of course, by extension all unions should be condemned. We have twelve guys who go out and drink at lunch time. We have 2000+ who go to the cafeteria or eat at their work station and you judge the entire work force by the twelve. :bang: :bang: :bang:
Traders on Wall Street probably consume as much alcohol as auto workers, except instead of beer they drink core vasey ear so that makes it OK.

Here come the wrongful termination lawsuits. I've seen cases of Workman's Compensation fraud where the employee was collecting WC and was video taped installing a new roof on his house.

Reinstated with full pay with no explanation to the many people who worked this case.

I think it stinks. Not that these guys were fired, but the fact that management is like "we're shocked, shocked that this kind of behavior was found"

that is nonsense because especially in the Detroit area, it goes on a lot and everyone knows about it and has done nothing until now that this story made the news. Instead they hope to sweep it under the rug, nothing but a few bad apples right? total facesaving BS.

Why would legalizing pot mean everyone would be waling around stoned?
Is everyone walking around drunk now?

If we had legalized pot sooner, Twinkies might not be gone today!
