I assume that by K GAP, you are referring to one of the settings in HTR's ROBOT2.

The K GAP setting is the maximum number of points a horse can be separated from the highest K Rating in the race. For example, if you set the gap to 10, only horses within 10 K points of the top K in the races would be included in the spot play.

The K Gap could result in all of the horses in a race being included, or just the top horse. It just depends on how the K ratings come up for a particular race.

Maybe It can show you contentious fields if you set it to 10 and get 5 runners that are within 10 pts of each other.

Useful or useless is in the eye of the beholder. Let's say that on your Rank Factors screen you set K1 - K6 and exclude K7 - K9+. What happens if you have a K5 with a 94 rating, but the top K in the race is 109? The 94 met your parameter, but really has little chance of winning because the contention in the race is divided. I don't filter with K Gap (yet) as I have found that filtering by K Line odds is very effective. K Gap is but one of many very useful tools in the HTR arsenal. Sometimes they don't seem like something you need on the first observation, but later they become a staple of your handicapping/data mining.
