Where do you see the biggest growth potential for international wagering on the Breeders’ Cup?

We see two major areas. The first is exotic or possibly even “jackpot” type wagering from large international commingled pools. There are a number of initiatives right now that are looking at creative ways to link the major pari-mutuel pools in the world. When that happens the Breeders’ Cup would really benefit by having one of the strongest international events.

Each year my bookie connection at Doncaster sends me the Timeform capping evaluations for the Breeder's Cup and it is really different, but helpful. He tells me that wagering THERE on races HERE is on the upswing and we exchange information regularly..

The permanent host site concept was a big part of the strategic plan adopted by the Board of Directors, and recent legislation in California awaiting signature from Gov. Schwarzenegger includes a Breeders’ Cup incentive. Where does that stand now that you are committed to Churchill Downs for the next two years and with NYRA’s financial standing seeming far more solid than before?

We have a lot of options and remain open to the possibility of a long-term host site for the event but have made no decisions beyond 2010-‘11 at Churchill. There are a number of factors that would have to come together to make a permanent or semi-permanent site a reality in terms of finding the right location that works for horsemen, fans and sponsors, the right business deal and the necessary support from state and local governments.
