Testing of embryonic stem cells in animals has shown the cells can help to regenerate severed spinal cords.

Because of his age, good physical condition and small frame, Martinez would be a perfect candidate, said Dr. Seftel.

We are, at a minimum, years away from getting anything useful out of embryonic stem cells, and probably decades. The only thing we've really gotten good at is growing tumors with them, unfortunately.

This sounds like a 10,000-1 shot, but I hope for the kid's sake that the longshot comes through.

24 years old. His wife is pregnant and due in a couple of days.

Wow, that's amazing! Very young and a soon-to-be dad. How can anyone not wish him well?
