I'm looking at a race for tomorrow,9/14,Pha 6th. The #1 horse Judiane's Jubilee raced with 134 pounds on her back last time. I didn't think they let horses race with that kind of weight. So I looked at the chart of that last race she came out of and everyone carried from 134 to 139 pounds. That was just a 25Kn2L on Turf for fillies. Is this some kind of gimmick condition Philly runs? Today Judiane's Jubilee is dropping 20 pounds off that race with the same conditions!

Wow, I didn't even know that existed anymore! That's an awful lot of weight to carry for a horse competing these days.

The condition book listed it as special amateur race, which I guess explains it except Justin Kravets rode in the race (he used to ride fairly regularly at Ct and Penn).

the race at philly was for amateur riders, hence the weights.

Dollars to donuts (and no, I haven't cheated) it was an amateur riders race. I thought you'd been around this game awhile.

The high weight races I've seen have been for experienced riders not amateur riders. You'd think they would give the amateur riders low weight just like apprentice jockeys get. Was just wondering if it was a Philly thing. Thanks for clearing that up while I think about betting the horse with both fists as Beyer says.

Give it a bit more thought. Amateurs don't have to make weight like a pro or apprentice. They be throwin' the A'teurs a bone without them having to pass on a Dilly Bar @ the DQ.

Not easy to pass on BTW.

Back when I was at Philly Park all the time, I remember them doing those amateur riders races a couple times a year. Delaware used to have them now and then too. Amateur riders, chaotic, not really what you wanted to wager on unless you like the "All" button.

Turkoman, really not a big deal for a horse to carry that much weight when they are ALL carrying that much weight---there's no handicap. Horses are strong, and exercise riders frequently weigh more than 110 pounds too. If you think 135 pounds or so is a lot of weight, remember that thoroughbreds in steeplechase races (usually converted turf flats horses) carry 150 or 160 pounds for 2+ miles while jumping over hurdles. So, it's possible.

Philly also used to have a day with a couple steeplechase races, usually the last day of turf racing for the year sometime around Columbus Day.

Having read this and your response to PA regarding smoking, to wit: "Never thought about it in those terms," I shall give all of your posts henceforth --- shall I say ? --- more weight.

Haven't Philly, Charlestown and Penn rode higher weights than listed and throw Mountaineer in there as well, 4 tracks I wouldn't touch with stolen money.

We were very happy to get our 3yo. homebred filly on the turf for the first time in the FEGENTRI race at the PHA, with Paul Power in the irons, where she beat Juliane's Jubilee. That horse ran well in the stretch, so no surprise she'd come back and win as the favorite today even shortening up a bit. Our filly carried 138 pounds, no big deal, given she's toting 155 every morning, whether it's 3 mile gallops or 5F breezes over the turf. :)
Nice to watch these amateur races especially with the Euro contingent, because it's a treat to see actual race riding over a distance of ground, just like our horses train in the mornings.

Took about two weeks off from racing. Since when did "PHA" become Park X?

Is this some joke? Down the road as more tracks become nothing more than side shows to slots they can start naming all the tracks "Park A, Park B, Park C".

In the words of the Ben Stein character in Ferris Bueller's Day off, "anyone, anyone? re: the need for Philly to change its name.

Too bad they didn't rename themselves Park A. They could've done a takeoff on the old Parkay Margarine commercials.

About 2 weeks ago > something to do with the link up with the casino

They call CT Hollywood casino at Charlestown races on Equibase now

Try looking up the weather forecast for that on Weather.com!

Thanks. Boy, it really is insulting to anyone who works at those tracks to have the names based around the casino. I know this is nothing new at Mountaineer (maybe Mnr really means manure), but I'm sure its the work of some "genius" marketing person (is there any marketing geniuses?).

Park X-----could you try to make yourself sound any more irrelevant?

Park X or Parx. Both are equally stupid. If they want to look irrelevant, they accomplished their task.

I'm sure they'll be crying about their irrelevance while they count their hundreds of millions of dollars in slot machine profits from the offices in their shiny new casino.

What relevance is it to anyone here how much money those casinos make? At the tracks with inflated purses from casinos has there been a NOTICEABLE improvement in the stock of horses at their track? Other than maybe Delaware, I can't think of any that have really upgraded themselves. Prairie Meadows? Mountaineer? Is Philly any more than marginally better than it was 5 years ago?
