U.S. names Asian carp czar

The White House has tapped a former leader of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Indiana Wildlife Federation as the Asian carp czar to oversee the federal response to keeping the invasive species out of the Great Lakes.

On a conference call today with Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin and other congressional leaders, President Obama's Council on Environmental Quality announced the selection of John Goss to lead the near $80 million, multi-pronged federal attack against Asian carp.

"This is a serious challenge, a serious threat," Durbin said. "When it comes to the Asian carp threat, we are not in denial. We are not in a go-slow mode. We are in a full attack, full-speed ahead mode. We want to stop this carp from advancing."

Asian carp, which have steadily moved toward Chicago (http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/neighborhoods.html?region=3275031) since the 1990s, present a challenge for scientists and fish biologists. The fish are aggressive eaters, consuming as much as 40 percent of their body weight a day in plankton, and frequently beat out native fish for food, threatening those populations.

They are also prolific breeders with no natural predators in the U.S. The fish were imported in the 1970s to help wastewater treatment facilities in the South keep their retention ponds clean. Mississippi River flooding allowed the fish to escape and then move into the Missouri and Illinois rivers. Some species can grow to more than 100 pounds.

My God do we need to get rid of the Asian Carp from the waterways! They truly are ruining them. Don't know if a Czar will make the work any better, but it is VITAL here in the mid-west. Many of the rivers are infested with the awful things, and the breeding schools are right about at Lake Michigan - if they get in there, they will eventually ruin Lake Michigan like they've ruined the IL rivers they've infested. They eat the food-stuff in the water that the native fish need, so those get killed off. These appreaently inedible things go crazy when motored boats go by and jump out of the water - sometimes many at a time, often flopping into boats and striking the passengers. I would not want to be an owner of any sort of power boat in an area where these fish have been introducted and infested.

I've often laughed about all these Czar's, many seemingly questionable to hold a public position. Seeing the thread title, I was even ready to joke that we need a Czar Czar. But we absoluetley need these fish eliminated from our fresh-waters, or there will be nothing left but those fish in the water and anything they life off of.

this carp is a big problem, no doubt about it.

however don't we already have some responsible agency that is in charge of such things like nuisance fish? Did we really need another czar? Could the department of fish and wildlife, or some other agency pull a few dozen people together and create a carp task force from existing resources? all government knows to do is to create a new czar, panel, agency, commission, department, etc, and they never go away. they becomes entities all to themselves and the problem mysteriously never goes away or is defeated, mainly because people would lose their cushy jobs if that happened. Don't say I didn't warn you when sometime down the road there is a Department of Carp in Washington with a 10 billion budget.

This "Czar" thing is a media creation. Every time someone is put in charge of a particular area, the media labels him a "Czar". It just means that he is concentrating exclusively on the problem of the Asian Carp. Believe me that is a major problem in this area. Of course some bloggers take the term "Czar" and use it to claim the administration is trying to circumvent democratic processes. Nonsense.

Invasive or introduced species are a huge problem all over the world. While Asian carp are a major threat, there are dozens of others in the US. To mention just three more; pythons in Florida, zebra mussels in all inland waterways, and feral pigs in many states.

Not nonsense. By law, these "czars" are answerable to no one but the president. Congress has zero control over them. Therefore, it is this power-hungry president's way of doing a Congress end around.

Everytime I read "carp" I said "crap" in my head. Thought this thread was about getting the imports out of Walmart. I read this:
