Group pledges push for veto of California horse racing bill
Opponents of gambling are targeting legislation that would allow bets on horses to lose.

Gambling opponents vowed Thursday to lobby Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to veto a bill to revive the state's slumping horse racing industry and allow betting on horses to lose starting in 2012.

The bill, originally proposed by Assembly Speaker John Perez (D-Los Angeles), hopes to lure the nation's top horses by taking a greater share from the bets to increase the purse for winning horse owners. The Legislature took final action on the bill Tuesday.

A spokesman for the governor said he has not taken a position on the bill.

Quote from article:

Near the end of the legislative session, Perez added language to allow the new betting scheme to begin in 2012 and continue until 2016. The delay would give firms that now accept horse racing bets time to prepare to the new exchange betting system.

A nonprofit group based in Sacramento promised to send mailers to nearly 10,000 churches and individuals in the next few days, urging them to call or write the governor to voice opposition to the bill.
Rev. James Butler, executive director of the California Coalition Against Gambling Expansion, complained that the bill was significantly rewritten and passed in the final days of the legislative session, giving critics little opportunity to testify against it.

A VETO is a veto. It does not matter if you go to church or not.

The whole thing is dead with a veto.

I know but do you think this group will carry any weight at all? The Governator isn't exactly a bible thumper.

With 4 out of 5 dollars coming from outside of the state of California,
this is a national issue. And the nation's horse players are speaking in a national poll.

The whole thing is dead with a veto.Believe me, you do not want to let an anti-gambling group get its foot in the door.

No. But we'll find out if the Governator has brains to go with his brawn.

Just when you think you have read the dumbest things ever written, racing tops itself again.

I approached a real clown at the Ringling Bros circus recently and told him about these horse racing people in California and he just shrugged and said, "how can i compete with that"

Getting tired of this nonsense.

You are not being forced to post here if you don't like it here...

His point is about traffic here vs. traffic there.

Seems small.

The amount of traffic leaving to take the poll? Yeah, probably.

My point was not the traffic. It was about principle.

I don't go to other boards or blogs and say "Hey, come take the poll at PaceAdvantage" or "Come play on the contest over at PaceAdvantage"

If he wants to poll the members of PaceAdvantage, he is perfectly free and able to create that poll right here.

It's unseemly of him to create a poll on his site then pimp it over here when he could have simply created the poll here in the first place.

This has happened many times already, and I have finally decided to speak out about it.
