Are first time starters required to workout from the gate prior to their debut?
I noticed yesterday at Saratoga that several did not show gate works...maybe some workouts just get missed.

No, they just need to get a gate card, meaning enter the gate, stand there and break from the gate (but it doesn't have to turn into a work post the break from the gate).

Different tracks do have different rules about that.
