Excerpt:

"One week ago, labor raised the issue of jobs for (Service Employees International Union members) and $300,000 for jockeys' health and welfare. Betfair seized the opportunity to place all issues in one bill $30 million for purses, jobs and dollars for labor to be fronted by Betfair and the introduction of exchange betting in California."

Vienna said the appearance of a quid pro quo makes the plan that much more suspect.

"It's a shady deal put together in the backrooms of Sacramento power brokers," he said. "It doesn't matter how much sugar you put in the poison. It's still poison."

You can't make this stuff up. I sent an email to the guy who wrote the article thanking him for asking some tough questions and getting some good answers.

Can someone point out these fixed races they are talking about??

Also, how can anyone in USA racing talk about integrity, when you have trainers with multiple Drug Violations still doing business as usual and information on the use of Tongue ties not being declared .

All the best to Mr Breed imho at least he is willing to try something to help save a dying sport.

Maybe those pointing fingers need to point that finger nearer home.

And maybe if Betfair had been in use a conviction or two would have been forthcoming. Paper leaves a trail as some in UK have found out.

Charlie, in my book the article is about the corruption behind the deal. That's why I used that particular excerpt. We all know that there is going to be cheating under any system.

Yes, I know. The process has been corrupted and this is the result.

Again, that's why I used the excerpt I used.

Critics claim Betfair would directly benefit if exchange betting becomes legal. Company officials deny those claims. Breed said critics of the proposal fail to see the bigger picture.

I couldn't stop laughing.

Like in political ads, always divert the attention away from yourself, always put out the negative on your opponent. Exchange betting is going to benefit California & racing ? Not before it benefits Betfair.

Provided you actually had clue one,

you would know that Betfair is already facilitating tremendous corruption on US racing.

Really believe someone is fixing US races and not getting down on Betfair?

It is ludicrous.

It is not so much that there is corruption in every system it is that the criminals ARE ALREADY ON BETFAIR.

I think i may have more clue than you Mr/Mrs Pleasure regarding these topics.

So, let me get this straight, they're saying that there are people out there who are snow white honest and who have never fixed a race before and now, because of exchange wagering, they're going to start fixing races?

If there is questionable betting on a matchup, Betfair just won't pay off the winners, they've done that before.

This is the same argument that college sports has with not wanting vegas to take wagers on their sport. They say vegas leads to corruption in college sports. Vegas is, if anything, a watchdog for irregular betting patterns. Without Vegas, the fix would be much easier to pull off, you can just get down with some large bookies across the country. Betfair will weed out the criminals.

Look at it this way. There's not an unlimited supplie of people in the racing industry, and if there is fixing because of Betfair, than those people will quickly be caught and exposed.

Hi Jeff...because the Senate refused to grant us a hearing on the Speaker's AB 2414, a decision was made over the weekend to instead utilize a Senate bill (SB 1072) that is in the Assembly to incorporate the current contents on AB 2414. That bill will be heard today in the Assembly GO and Appropriations Committee. Additionally, the exchange wagering authorization is going to be delayed until May 2012. That, and some other minor changes appears to have prompted Magna going neutral on the bill (still trying to confirm this). Please give me a call if you have any other questions...George Wiley

If they enact a takeout increase without a mitigating player friendly offset such as exchange wagering, I say the California product does not deserve one single penny of player business.

I do not see the "urgency clause" in 1072!
