From the article:

Hanessian estimates that the track profited about $3,500 from the wrong-horse incident. He said a decision was made round that figure up to $5,000.

How would having a different horse than the one listed in a race enhance a track's profit? I thought the very essence of pari-mutuel wagering was the constant track take (%-wise) regardless of the competitors. Except in the case of a minus show pool, perhaps. ?????

I am asking myself the same question. They took in about 1K in fines but aside from that I cannot figure it out

I emailed RD with the question. Their website says August 31 the track will host the 1st annual Wife-Carrying Contest!! I am going to check the results to see if any of THOSE fillies get mis-identified and the wrong one gets in that race!!LOL!!

Woodward received a $500 fine for bringing the wrong horse to the paddock and received an additional $250 fine for leading the wrong horse to the paddock on a subsequent day.Joe's no math dummy... on the third offense he gets off scot-free, and from then on he starts to make money with this clever ploy!

The racing secretary emailed me back- said they were supposed to return all bets since the track mis- i.d.ed the wrong horse. their takeout was the "profit".
