Is the Oak Tree meet being run at Hollywood Park this year?? If so, since i will be in CA in October, about 15 miles from the track, is it worth the trip or should i go to Universal Studios instead. Thanks for any input. rbj

Its not as good as Santa Anita. If you've never been to Hollywood you might want to consider going. (just lock your car doors driving in Inglewood)

You're in the HOOD! Carry mace in your pocket in the parking lot...
If you win a huge sum of money, I would keep an eye on who's watching you at all times. lol. I remember the story of the guy who won the pick 6 at Hollywood Park and got murdered in his hotel room.

I like Hollywood Park and don't mind going there at all. It's no Santa Anita though.
Didn't I see the Hollywood Park sign in the background of the Reginald Denny beating tapes at Florence and Normandy?

Not true. Hollywood Park is 4 miles from LAX and located in a safe neighborhood. In fact it's probably safer now that at any time in the recent past. It's a working class community and people take pride in where they live. 5 to 10 miles east can get a little scary at times. I wouldn't hesitate to bring my family for a day of racing at HP. You'll have a great time.

+1.
Although it lacks the physical beauty of SA, I found what Vic says to be true.
I work not too far from HOL and enjoy going with co-workers on Friday nights.

You know... this is something that really bugs me and I am shocked nobody discusses this.
I have never been to Hollywood but I keep hearing how bad the area around it is. Of course it's not just Hollywood, people have said this about Fair Grounds, Hialeah, Aqueduct, Turf Paradise, Hawthorne, and the list goes on.
It's time the tracks gave a damn and put some money as well as seek some civil assitance in improving these areas. Churchill's part of town used to be pretty rundown 13 years ago and now it's actually very nice now. Granted much of the credit goes to The University expanding but it was a catalyst.
Around America all these older nieghborhoods have just been forgotten but recently these older houses and nieghborhoods are going through some kind of renaissance as we speak. It's time these tracks and local goverments come together and get something done.
Frankly, the track not being in a good neighborhood excuse has passed it's course!

I've been to Hollywood Park many times. Its safe enough. Just stay on the main streets {Imperial, Century} going to and from the track. Its worth a visit if you have never been there.

Agreed, and I'll add that the weather is as good there all year round as any track in America. The outdoor clubhouse dining or a box up on the third floor is a great place to sit and have a meal and make some wagers. The nearly unobstructed sight lines of the entire track are great.

There are NO strip clubs within walking distance of HP. Er. That's what I've been told.

Not quite, it is still a few miles away. In the old days used to drive through that intersection often. Back then, in the pre simulcasting days, when California racing was at its peak, traffic to Hollypark on weekends was heavily congested. In order to avoid the traffic on Century and Manchester, would usually exit the Harbor Fwy at Florence or even Gage and go west and then south at Crenshaw then west on 90th. That was in the good old days of racing. Back then, many veteran horseplayers knew the best alternate routes to the track when traffic was bad.

Been to Hollywood many times, very nice track with good views of racing from most areas of the track. Was the premier harness track of the west coast in the 1960's with very large crowds and top notch racing.

I briefly dated a gal who's uncle set the (then) world mark for pacers at that track. Horse: Warm Breeze Driver: Bob Farrington, same guy that had Rambling Willie. Owned by the Arnolds.

Great! Taking very full advantage of my enforced vacation since Tyler got hurt. Have been to the track 3 times since July 24. Zenny day and twice with friends. Ready to roll when Tyler's back for Oak Tree.:)

While waiting for a bettable race, I often wondered what could be done between races at HP. I love a "Pretty Pony " show both on and off track. ;)

I go to the Fairgrounds several times a year and it is located in historical mid-city. You always see families walking, jogging, etc. in the area. In no way is it near the hood as you would say, in fact it is where the world famous Jazz Fest is held, just watch where you park for that event.

fair grounds is just in an "old" area of town, it's not the hood.

When my group went to Hollywood Park this last season, we had nothing but a good time, Vic and the other staff were great. Would not hesitate to take anyone there for a great day. Hope Hollywood will stay for us for a long time.
