I just happened to click on the free live video of the Balmoral Park harness races at www.balmoralpark.com , and saw an advertisement for a 10 cent Super High 5 at their track. I'm not a fan of betting gimmicks, but for those that are, do you like the idea of a 10 cent Super High 5?

Yes. Play it all the time, including last night. Hit it for a dime and made a few dollars--nothing to speak of. The best long-term strategy is to use a non-favorite horse you like keyed in the first four or even all five positions. Also, never use a strong favorite back of third position unless you feel the horse is very vulnerable. The reason is, such favorites very rarely finish back of third without some major disaster and such problem is likely to have the horse off the ticket completely. Use the extra slots for more longshots.

Balmoral is the perfect track for this wager, because unlike Indiana, the track is unforgiving to non-competitive horses. The long stretch exposes all weaknesses and you do not need a perfect trip to win or even be on the ticket. Indy, on the other hand, favors speed and positioning. In-form, powerful horses get lost on a regular basis because they are in the wrong flow. Bad, out-of-form horses can ride the rail and make tickets where they have no business being. This makes it exceedingly difficult to even hit a super at Indy, let alone a pentafecta. Of course, the saving grace there is the huge payouts. Last week, four shortish-priced horses ran together in a super and the dime paid over $200. How is this possible?? The weird results there make the betting public wary of virtually anything. If you are familiar with thoroughbred racing, it's often like a field of ten maiden claimers all making their first start on turf.
