Many a moons ago I read the following axiom. Speed, class and consistency were the 3 cornerstones of handicapping. Based on this and a few other factors I developed a system of rating in the days when you could only play the local track and had no computer.

Only 4 year olds and up (later the year 3+up), claiming and allowance.
Speed = Best of last 3 Beyers

Class = Average of Beyer numbers of the WINNER in the last 10 races or showing in the PP’s.
(Ad the beaten lengths*Beyer adjustment to the horses Beyer.( 6fur=2.4, Mile=1.8, 1/+1/6 mile=1.7, etc.)

Consistency= Number of wins/number of starts as percentage. (Now days maybe on today’s surface)

Pace= Beyer number of WINNER (last 3 races) minus horses beaten lengths at 2nd call* Beyer adjustment. Use best number.

In the old days of full fields I found, that 85% percent of the races were won by a horse that was #1 in a category and no worse then 3rd in an other.
All ways thought about converting the consistency % figure in a Beyer type rating and weighting the figures and combining them in a single rating.
Any thoughts on this ?
