Just under 16,000 attendance, handle was around 13 million, according to the charts. Anyone have an official figure?

Not a bad day for the worse track surface in the world and the biggest cupcake in racing.

How did the Del Mar Saturday and Sunday compare to Saratoga on the same days?

I'm sure Saratoga's was higher, however Del Mar racing is far from dead as some have said.

Doesn't Saratoga also have a casino to attract customers? I wonder what attendance would be at Del Mar if there was a casino on the grounds?

The casino is at the Harness track. rbj

No. The harness track (not on the grounds) has a racino, which is slots. They don't keep track of attendance at the Racino, which again, is a seperate entity than the thoroughbred track.

I wonder how long it will take for Carl to return to this thread where he has once again provided incorrect information. If past history is any indication, we'll be waiting awhile.

He might be too busy doing it in other threads for a while. ;) :)

Del Mar racing sucks this year as well...lot of cheaper races and just so many claimers and cheap claimers as well as maiden claimers as well. Just no real reason for anyone to bet the place. Just take a look at yesterday's card at Saratoga, a strong Monday card considering they just ran 4 of their biggest races of the year on Saturday and Sunday and Campo was still able to put together a dynamic and strong Monday card.

Just spoke with the front desk at Saratoga. The receptionist said the Saratoga racino "is a little less than a mile away." (her words) Personally I think it would be a stretch to say that the racino does not help business at all.

How far away do they hold the Friday night concerts from Del Mar?

What was the attendance at the B52 concert? Was that added to track attendance for the day?

One night a week is a little different than a casino open every day.

Do the people from the racino get free admission to Saratoga? I really don't know but how many people from the casino go to Saratoga? I would think more people from the track would end up there after the races if anything.

You can bash Del Mar all you want but:

No race track in the country does a better job of generating a new generation of race track attendees.

And when Oak Tree moves to Del Mar it will only get better because they can market to all of the college students that are gone during the summer!

I agree! surprise.

I'm not sure about the Oak Tree stuff but as far as marketing goes Del Mar is hands down the best.

I still contend that having a racino less than a mile a way helps the attendance!
There are definitely couples where one likes the slots and the other like the ponies.

Have you ever compared the two areas? I've never been to Saratoga but I know Del Mar is right off a main freeway and is easy to get to.

Is Saratoga easy to get to or do most of the people have to travel a long way to get there?

Its literally on the track this year. Some are at the top of the strecth. and the big ones (like the B-52's) are in the infield.

Not too sure about that one. Saratoga is like a big family picnic area at times, been going there since i was 5 and everytime i go there are tons of kids and young adults. Also, i dont believe the harness racino adds 1 person to the flat track attendance...if anything the flat track boosts the racino attendance, in august anyways. rbj

My understanding is that Saratoga is more of a resort vacation destination where people go for days or weeks at a time. I think they get a lot of one-dayers on Saturdays and Sundays.

So then that helps Del Mar big time, right? I don't get the Saratoga thing. Saratoga has had large attendance(younger and older) every year it's been around, which we all know is a long time. The casino is was not built till 2004.

You will never see as many young people at Saratoga. And I not even including concert nights on Fridays. Its not even close! Talk to anybody that has been to both. Two things that Del Mar has that beats any track in the in the US and possibly the world the percentage of young people and the percentage of women.

Not exactly, Saratoga has a captive audience. Del Mar has to compete with a zillion other things to do in San Diego.

Now, Andy you live 20 minutes away and you know that if theres traffic and unless you get there very early theres always traffic, it can take you an hour or more to get from you easy chair at home to a box in the clubhouse

Well, with 80,563 people at Saratoga compared to 48,449 at Del Mar this weekend...i just beg to differ. rbj

To use your line of thinking...just imagine if Saratoga had a pro baseball team, a popular zoo , ocean beachfront etc to draw people to the area. rbj

Ask anyone who's been to both? Ok, I did yesterday on my way into the Spa, I asked Steve Christ, and he said there's nothing like Saratoga and as nice as Del Mar may be, Del Mar is no Saratoga.

If anything it takes away from attendance, etc. The racino is air conditioned.

Are you ever right?

He's clueless, knows nothing about Saratoga or Saratoga Harness. No clue. When we go to Saratoga we don't go up there for the Racino and pass time by going to the flat track. We go up there to go to the flat track and pass time at the Racino, as does pretty much everyone else who goes to the racino. He's a California apologist who needs to realize that basically no one cares about California racing anymore but he can't admit that it's the truth.
