What happened to Tyler Baze today at Del Mar? I am assuming paddock or gate incident as nothing is evident from the result charts. Heard in passing on the CalRacing feed something about foot injury and facial lacerations.

TVG said he was kicked by a horse.....he walked into ambulance on his own.....swelling and facial lacerations....seems to be okay, but no details.

Maybe Vic Stauffer can update before long.......

Hopefully, Tyler is back in the saddle very soon.

Some angry fans were saying this was karma for him stiffing that 2-1 shot in the last race yesterday. I told those guys "no way he stiffed" and they said, "yeah, the horse was a speed horse on paper and the guy wrangled and strangled him and let the 8-5 O'Neill horse have the race on a silver platter" then i said, "well, maybe they were teaching the horse to rate better and relax" and they were like " i don't care, the pace was very slow and if that horse fell on the lead he would have won or at very worst been 2nd"

I was trying to convince them that no way Tyler Baze is going to stiff a horse at Del Mar and they didnt' care.

Geez, some people are so bitter.

Sorry Vic, Get well Tyler!

DEL MAR, Calif. - Tyler Baze is expected to miss at least three weeks and possibly as much as two months after suffering facial injuries when he was struck by the head of his mount before Saturday's fifth race at Del Mar, according to his agent, Vic Stauffer.

Baze was hospitalized on Sunday and was scheduled to meet with doctors to determine whether he would need surgery for fractures near his right eye, Stauffer said.

The field for Saturday's fifth race was behind the starting gate when Baze's mount, Night Justice, threw his head back and struck Baze. The jockey was unseated and was quickly taken to first aid, and then to a local hospital. Baze was hospitalized on Saturday night.

Stauffer said that Baze suffered a broken nose and fractures in the orbital bones near his right eye. The eye was also swollen shut and the jockey suffered a bruised retina.

It was unclear how much time Baze would miss, Stauffer said. It will depend on how quickly the swelling subsides and what doctors tell him about the fractures.

"It could be three weeks and it could be eight weeks," Stauffer said.

Jockey Tyler Baze, who has not ridden since July after suffering facial injuries in an accident at Del Mar, is hoping to return to riding in late February or early March after undergoing surgery to improve his vision on Jan. 19.

Needs eye surgery. This sucks and I hope he recovers quickly and retains all of his vision.

Vic, maybe you can send best regards from everyone here at Pace!

The longer it drags out, with the short fields, the harder it will be for him to get back.

Vic Stauffer rethinks his job and his life after Tyler Baze is seriously injured after being thrown from a horse at Del Mar last summer. Their story involves strong wills, guilt and mutual respect.

This jockey-agent breakup isn't acrimonious -- latimes.com (http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-dwyre-20110215,0,945022,print.column)
