Racetrack slot machines take big leap forward
Ohio Lottery Commission votes its support

CLEVELAND -- Gov. Ted Strickland's plans for slot machines at racetracks are officially back on track.

Ohio Lottery Commission members today unanimously voted to scrap year-old regulations that were to have governed the operations of 17,500 video slot machines at racetracks. Commissioners began writing new rules, but left out key details -- including the maximum number of machines permitted and the state's share of revenue from the devices.

The commission also unanimously gave the go-ahead for state lawyers to seek court approval for the new type of gambling.

If I had my way the slots would stay in Las Vegas. But, that is not the case as everyone knows for Ohio racing to succeed they are a necessary evil. I am looking at this from my point of view. I am fifty miles from River Downs and fifty miles from Beulah. I am twenty miles from Lebanon Raceway where I bet at the simulcast center. I love live racing and I don't want to drive 100 miles to the Indiana tracks. If Ohio loses these tracks they will never get them back. I also go to Turfway. I hope the Kentucky legislature gets their shit together. A racetrack is an awful thing to lose.
