Would like a general idea how everybody stands on field sizes. what is your preferred field size???
1) 6 or less
2) 7
3) 8
4) 9
5)10
6) more than ten

Normally I prefer full fields, but you can get overlays in small fields as well. And you are less likely to be elimated by trouble.

At least 8 and not more than 14 (16 for the Kentucky Derby)

I prefer 6 or less in dirt sprints unless too competitive; full fields on turf; around 8 for dirt routes and AW.

Interesting question. As a horseman, I like smaller fields, if I declare. As a bettor, I like the larger fields, ideally 10 or more. Gives me a chance to explore PPs for value vs having to beat a heavy chalk in short field for value vs risk.

The ideal field size is 12. It makes all the pools work. It keeps the pace honest. It covers up a multitude of sins. It does not however make up for a 18% takeout.
