Rules

The contest will last from July 17th and end after the last race from Del Mar on August 22nd. The contest days are every Saturday and Sunday. You get 10 $2 Win/Place bets on any thoroughbred track running every Saturday and Sunday during the contest. Bets need to be in by 12:30pm eastern every race day. If your bet scratches, you get post time favorite. If you bet an entry you get both halves. Please post the bets in this thread. The highest profit or lowest amount of money lost at the end will be the winner.

I will try and update the scores after everyday, but I can't promise it. When putting your wagers in this thread, please indicate track, race, horse number. Only11 wins and Dahoss has to leave the board for good. Dahoss wins and Only11 donates $100 to a charity Dahoss chooses. Good luck.

I get the feeling at least one of these rules will be broken on day 1. Hope I'm wrong.

Which one...or ones? I thought they were all pretty specific and it seems like having all of the plays in at a specific time is the fairest way.

I thought they were all pretty specific and it seems like having all of the plays in at a specific time is the fairest way.personaly, i don't want to see you leave. i would be willing to put up $100 for a contest between you 2 as long as i don't have to monitor it. i would be more that happy to put the money up upfront. but i don't want any part of the contest to have to do with you leaving this board. i need guys like you with intelligence in the horse racing game to keep posting here, that is why i am willing to put up the money.

Now thats funny...
I wont change the rules but...if i had a choice i would make this change every horse picked has to be over 3/1 and this is why...

Supposed i jumped to a 5 horse lead(Likely scenario)...and leading thru out...all of a sudden Chalkie Dahoss decides to pick chalks and he gets back in it with a bunch of 3.60 horses now what?
Imade 2 picks today that i would never make...but if i get off to a slow start at least i could be sure i have Baze/Catalano for a 4.00 winner..
But we will play by HIS rules i will post my picks here..

Only11, I'm not sure if you read the rules or not, but I thought they were pretty self explanatory. It really has nothing to do with the number of horses that win. It's based on the highest amount of money won or lowest lost (ROI) at the end. There won't be a 5 horse lead, because it is based on money. You might jump to a high $ amount lead (likely scenario), but if that happens a bunch of $3.60 horses (my bread and butter obviously) won't get me back into it.

I have to give PA credit though. He called it from the start. What exactly was confusing about my first post and why put the picks in the Man O War thread? Especially after I pm'd you this thread? And there is no reason for you to leave. We made the agreement and I have no desire for you to leave.

Try and not lose your head the first day. Your horse was probably best. I don't know about being "tons the best" but for your sake it was unfortunate he had to wait. The point is, stop whining already. Did I whine when CC Lopez rode like an idiot in the 1st? How about Jara's ride in the 4th at Monmouth? It'll all even out.

He stiffed the horse? This is getting comical. I don't have the time to try and educate you any further. Please, please watch some replays and understand how trips influence the way a horse runs. You are totally clueless in that aspect of the game.

DA ok let me clear this up for you "stiff " is a word often used to simply say the jock is a ahole...it doesnt mean as in fixing races..
Now i just saw the race again the 2 made 3 moves...had the lead briefly..then the stranglehold began behind your piece of garbage..then moved up to engage then dropped back..made his bid then flatten..

How can someone be so confused about simple aspects of this game? You would have preferred he went out and joined CC when he moved 4 furlongs too early?

There off DURKIN SAYS LUBASH TO THE FRONT HAS A CLEAR LEAD
3 seconds later
DURKIN SAYS LUBASH HAS BEEN YANKED BACK TO 3RD(YANKED BEING THE IMPERATIVE WORD) 25 seconds later

Dahoss9698
07-17-2010, 05:29 PM
Who cares what Durkin saw? I'm asking, would you have preferred he went out dueling on the lead? Do you think that would have changed the horses outcome? If anything he would have finished farther back.

Watch more, talk less. You could learn a lot by watching races and not whining.

Given your position in the baseball world, why only a $100 donation? I recall the mention of a $350k sign-on bonus - surely more followed. The $100 donation seems rather nominal, some might say miserly, no?

Fair enough - I'd never seen anyone call out a sign-on bonus on this board until your post. I thought it was odd. Of course there was the British chap who informed us all that he was a millionaire. Gotta ask: how many yrs do you have to play in MLB to get a pension?

Attitude!!!

Small poster I have up on my office wall:

ATTITUDEby: Charles SwindollThe longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.

Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.

And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes.

IMO, man is a machine, and his reactions to the situations of life are largly...automatic.Our "attitude" has been established over a very long period of time...and it does not change overnight. Many of us have read an inspiring book, or attended a "life-changing" seminar...and we thought that we would "change" as a result...

A week or two later...we are right back where we started from.

Lasting attitude changes only come about, after a great deal of effort.

The hitter doesnt have enough time to load his arms and shoulders to hit a 93mph fastball,he has to start his swing alot sooner..as soon as the pitcher loads his scapula(Take a close look at Strasburg back when he breaks his arms)the hitter starts to load..
a major league hitter can hit a fastball with his eyes close from 10ft away
By that time he has started his swing and he already has anticipated where he THINKS IS GOING..
Thats why Strasburg is the best pitcher ever drafted..his late movement @98mph makes it impoosible to hit, then he throws a knee bender at 88mph..
Example:If your watching a nascar race would you wait to see your car when crossing in front of you..or your going to TRACK IT from far and slow it down?
MLB hitters do the same,,Bonds would track it from left center,Pujols from dead center, thats why you hardly ever saw a bad swing, there tracking skills are filthy..Hard to learn harder to teach..

What about MLB players who say they "picked up the pitch late" when talking about a HR or hit in a post game interview. Obviously their watching the ball then and adapted to where it was going. Coaches tell you to keep you eye on the ball all the way.

I think if batters just swung at a "guessed" spot they thought it was going on the plate everytime, you'd see so many MLB players swinging at ridiculous places that the ball is not even close to. Like a high-outside pitch goes across and the player is swing down and inside. Would look pretty funny and you'd hear so much laughter from the announcers every game. Players bats are always close to the pitch even when they miss. Everyone can't be guessing right 99% of the time whether they hit it or not. JMO

They dont have to time to adjust..the ball is travelling at 93mph..take a close look at some video in slow motion...most major league hitters dont know how to explain it...thats why they hit the ball 3 out of 10 times

Not all pitches in a game are 90-100 MPH fastballs. You have change ups, sliders, curves, sinkers, etc. Only Fastballs travel fast(90+ to 100). Just based on my opinion and from me playing and also from what MLB batters say in post game interviews.

Well, not true at all. You should know this as a big baseball guy. Players hit more than 3 out of every 10 balls. They're are fielders in the field who get them out mostly after they hit the ball. I dont know how you can say they only hit 3 out of every 10 balls. That than means every player should be hitting under.100 because if only 3 out of 10 balls are hit, that means the other two balls by very good chance will be fielded. You'd have 95% of the league hitting .100 or a little more at best.

No of course not. They swing as the pitcher is throwing but they track the baseball. You don't guess a spot. You'd have 80% of players swinging WAY OFF where the pitch actually is and they would all look funny. Baseball players always pretty much swing where the picth is whether they hit it or not. They track it. Not every picth is a 95-100 MPH fastball.

Actually, in my opinion, its an "educated" guess. Hitters Only makes it sound as though the hitter has "no chance" and that is wrong too if thats what he is implying.

A hitter begins to "build" into the swing as the pitcher is nearing the top of his release. As the ball is released, the hitter (depending on shadows and lighting etc etc) can actually pick up rotation and then make that educated guess.

But the energy is already built into the swing...motion started...but the swing can be adjusted slightly (to foul off a pitch etc etc).

Only is right in the fact that if the hitter is wrong though (not being able to pick up rotation etc etc) he will look like a complete fool at the plate (either way out in front or behind). Or in some cases, just stand there wondering "what happened" lol

Oh I agree, most are in front or behind the pitch but they do pick up where it's going and swing at the ball while watching it. It's not just a blind guess swing at some random spot they pick. Enjoy ;)

I hope that Only11 can make a comeback today to keep the interest level up. If he gets a beating like he did last week, the ref may have to call this fight a TKO. If 11 loses big this weekend, he'll have to take longer shots next week, and that's a losing proposition, barring luck.

The reason i played in the big leagues was because i had a very short memory, its amazing i give out fridays winner at spa(20.00) and no one says anything Dahoss comes up witha 40.00 winner and now hes abeled the chosen one..
Boy didnt know there was so much venom towards me..great..he will hit his wall but this is what i wonder.....if he played those picks...
i had a bad day at Spa butt i had HOT VISION at Arlington and the exacta,,now i didnt post the pick because i came up with the horse after 12:30..No excuses and if anyone doubts me i will send them a pm with my twinspires username and password....
No excuses ...if i lose like i said i will leave and donate my $100....and im still going to talk ...why because this is entertaiment and fun...!

We all have our days some more then others...if you hit a pick 6 for 300,000 it shouldnt be one of your best lifetime moments if it is then something went wrong in your life..
Heres a story....Mack Brown football coach at Texas had just won his 1st national championship when beating USC...he was interviewed the next day and 1 of the questions was"Mack you won your 1st national Cahampionship beating the heavly favored USC this has to be in your top 3 moments in your life?"Mack responded if you hit a bottom of the 9th hr to win a WS,a game winning shot to win a championship, a final drive to win a SB and you considered that moment.. one of your top 3 lifetime moments, then something went drastically wrong in your life....and IMO i agree 100% ...

nice pick at monmouth dahoss. i have to give you alot of credit, you do your work. the only thing i want to point out to you is that the $41.00 horse is something like a an 8-1 shot before the race. a matter of fact the horse left the gate @14-1 and came home @19-1. but still an excellent pick. and i know that yesterday in the morning that you never thought that horse was going to pay $40 in your wildest imagination. i am glad you picked up the cheese with that one!

only11,

I understand your question but for me that question is a little too personal. What I did was totally legal and between the Government and me. However I will say I am proud of what I did.

I do believe there are people who make a living betting horses because I know some. I also know it is hard work and they go through losing streaks like all horseplayers. When that occurs they are not happy people because their livelihood depends on winning. It is a tough way to make a living but it can be done. However, it is more than a full time job and a good percentage are not the most personable people on earth.

Just catching up. Dude, that happens ALL THE TIME, longshots go up.i got a funny feeling that there were a few people in the know on that horse that masacred a few off shore bookmakers. keep in mind that the bookmakers have limits on the odds that they pay on a horse. from the old days in vegas it used to be 20-1 for win. this one was very close to the limit. how they got this one to pay $40 is beyond me. my incremental odds line had it at 7-1. the people in the dutrow camp are pretty sharp dudes and love to take down scores. i was very fortunate to be on this one.

So let me get this straight. It's impossible to pick winners when the horses need to be posted by 12:30? With the exception of the west coast tracks, all of the scratches for the tracks we have been playing are in well before (like an hour...at least) 12:30.

What is so impossible about this? Lots of excuses for some really poor handicapping.

How do we know the one that losses this contest doesn't just create a new user name and rejoin the forum? People using mulitple user names on a site wouldn't be a first.
Kimsus the reason i will walk away if i lose without going into another username is because i honor my word...racing is a great game members on this forum are great people ..but it isnt my life..i =f i lose i will miss posting but life does goes on....
Plus after this contest is over i will have a surprise..enjoy your day at the spa..

I'm just pointing out the obvious, I'm not casting doubt on anyone's sincerity to leave a forum, I've seen message boards from DRF to this one and it is my experience people will always find a way to post. They rarely leave forever.

It only takes a few big hits to get back into it, trust me it happens, keep plugging. The key is looking for value in races.

Why should you care either way?

Personally I think it is a silly contest since you asked my opinion, if one wanted to prove their superiority for a month span in handicapping, then I would think that would be reward enough, but to throw in I am leaving a board for the loser seems like highschool stuff. We are all men I her and again I don't believe people can stay away forever, though that is my opinion and that is why I think the penalty is nonsensical.

your wireless network has the same IP as your non wireless connection, and it logged by the server here at PA

unless only11 is going to start driving around from Starbucks to Starbucks just to post on Paceadvantage.............

Not necessarily, I have access to 3 wireless networks where I am posting from right now, it's that easy.

Pa you love to trash me,,,when i opened that door..
This is entertainment to me...
Im about to post my ADW numbers up that will really shut some of your followers...
Dahoss beating me means nothing...it means he won...he didnt shut me up hes a lifetime loser at the track like me and most people..
If you carefully read my posts i have tipped my hat to him plenty of times..But its ok at the end of the contest if i lose i have no problem leaving and donating my $200 doubled it its for a good cause..

You keep coming back with this lifetime winner/loser stuff. What does it have to do with anything? You keep harping on you ADW stuff as though that will shut everyone up. The reality is you are the one that needs to shut up. It's like 3 weeks overdue already.

The original bet was that you(Dahoss) would leave the board if you lost and only11 would donate $100.00 to a breast cancer charity if he lost. If my recollection is correct.

We have had our battles and really if you look back it was fun, I suspect we even relished it. It doesn't mean I want you to leave or anyone else for that matter, a public forum is a place where you interact and exchange ideas.

good work again today dahoss. i looked up all your selections and realise that you put alot of work in to get them. your selections are real and top quality.

the only thing i can say that is missing is knowing the physicality of the horses that you select at 12:30 in the afternoon that run at 5:00. if you had that tool at your disposal you would really have something there with the combination of your selections and looks.

Not necessarily, I have access to 3 wireless networks where I am posting from right now, it's that easy.

There is more to this story than just looking for IP addresses also. But only having 3 IP's would be picked up pretty quick. You realize that IP address info is available right down to the street it is coming from right? Neighborhood info is available also. This would be a discussion for PA to have.......he is an expert at spotting retreads...........

Here is some constructive criticism for Only11.... If you are going to make a comeback.... worry more about handicapping and less about talking baseball with the world. It seems as though you are more interested in PROVING you are a good handicapper by posting your ADW account and all that, or how important you used to be in the BIG LEAGUES.... instead of letting your handicapping do the talking like Dahoss is doing.

Just Handicap. Don't talk smack, Don't talk baseball, Don't tell us how good you are. Just Handicap, and Post selections.

Hedevar what was your profession ?Im asking this question to you....do you really think people could make a living playing horses?...BS little Guy claims hes a lifetime winner ...i almost fell off my chair...of course he will tell you the 19.60 winner and then he goes 4 for 34,,,

I don't want to turn this into a TLG vs. only11 thread when DaHoss is already handing you your a** quite easily, but I will point out that I remember Andy giving out a $100,000+ Pick 6 back on the old DRF forum. That had to go a long way towards putting him ahead for life.

And Only11, while you're talking is amusing or something, you do realize that the guy who talks trash while he's getting destroyed at something he brags about looks pretty stupid (that guy being you). It's like you going up to the plate and striking out in 4 straight at-bats, then bragging about how you owned that pitcher.

Dahoss i have complimented you a few times but never once have i ever had member say anything good about me..and im fine the idiots that say i stink thats bothers me more then your know it all attitude
If they would take time to go thru my history i have posted very few times with few winners...
And i believe i could do anything..and im having fun with this.. we will finish up...and no im not going to shut up...

That may be, but he's backing it up, and then some. You can't deny that his methodology and subsequent scoring support his handicapping ability. I have no ill will toward you. However, as opposed to Dahoss's sublime demeanor where his capping does the talking, you prefer to have your mouth talk on behalf of your handicapping ability, which seems near zero. Honestly, you're at about minus 40% return, and he's at plus 50% using the same rules. You keep talking about being hemmed by the rules, yet fail to acknowledge that if Dahoss played by your rules, the same result may occur anyway. Skill is skill under any set of rules. Show some contrition and you'd get further along in this thread and on this board.

You really have no shame, huh? Between this garbage and the press conference thread are you kidding me? Now you want to change the rules? A week before this whole thing started, I outlined the rules. Here is a post from me on July 10th (1 week before this started).

I win, you donate $100. You win, I leave for good. That way we each get what we really want.

The contest will last from July 17th and end after the last race from Del Mar on August 22nd. The contest days are every Saturday and Sunday. You get 10 Win/Place bets on any thoroughbred track running either of those days. Bets need to be in by 12:30pm every race day. If your bet scratches, you get post time favorite. Highest total at the end wins.

Here was your response....

I PROMISE YOU AND FORUM MEMBERS WHO DISLIKE YOU...

August 22nd will be your last day on PA....

Then you preceded to talk more shit and mocked my plays. Even said you would spot me 3 horses. Imagine that. And you gave me a nickname, "Chalkie." How ironic.

Now if you had an issue with the time, why didn't you say anything? Honestly, I don't want to have to waste anymore time on this than I already am and having to track down post times is way more than I want to get involved in. That is why 12:30 was selected, because it gives us both enough time to get scratches, changes, track conditions, etc. before posting our selections. I could post my picks the night before, and have a pretty good idea of what bets I will be making. I know I'm not alone there.

The contest is fair, because we both are playing by the same set of rules. We both have the same chance to do well, but it is up to us to do it.

The bottom line is this exercise is similar to tournaments I have been in and rewards the person who is the better handicapper. The sample is large enough (120 races) that having one good day can't really erase 11 bad ones. And it is a profit based contest, so picking 10 favorites everyday isn't going to get the job done.

But, you had a full week to mention you didn't really like the format and didn't. You didn't seem to have an issue until you got down by $150. What a coincidence! The real funny part of all of this, is you challenged me.

No one cares about your ADW's and no one cares about your made up baseball career. This isn't about either one of those things. It's about picking winners and showing a profit.

You don't sound like a bad guy, I know you didn't ask for any advice, so pardon me if I am out of line here. But just let your handicapping do the talking for now on, post a few winners get the ball rolling and have fun with it. Dahoss is, it's not the end of the world all things considered with some of the things that are going on in the world. I still think the contest is ridiculous, I think there is a place for you and Dahoss on this forum and frankly it wouldn't be the same place without the same dynamic each brings. That's enough from me, I wouldn't want to tarnish the bad reputation I have built here.

Looks like only11 almost broke even today with one $19.80 winner, which was enough to beat Dahoss who backed into a $6.10 winner via a scratch....for those dying to know...
