View Full Version : What was Beth Thinking?

Okay, so here is what happened.

Beth clicked a button on Facebook that said "invite people you know to Facebook." Suddenly, she has sent out several THOUSAND requests for friendships!

LOL - My girl is nothing if not friendly, but not THAT friendly.

So, if you were in her address book and you received such a message, you will understand it is not some kind of marketing stunt.

And before you tune up the wise-ass comments that we are all famous for around here, remember it was an accident. :bang:

that's the reason I quit facebook. That kind of crap......

They hijack your contacts and index it on their systems and then use it at their leisure........there is much more.....but I won't bore anyone with it......needless to say 500k people didn't quit for no reason.........btw, they say that they have 500 million users now :bang:

Somehow I just know I am going to regret this but I have to ask... DJ, what are monkey tears?

Dave, I never could get the "will you be my friend thing". It just didn't have a good feel. I registered and unregistered in a span of less than 48 hours.

Be glad Beth didn't send out dinner invitations.

I can think of someone who had their race pictures " borrowed " by others without their permission & now they claim them as their own.

Grits,

Personally, I think Facebook is one of the great inventions of the new millennium. I have re-connected with like 75 people from my school days, including two of my absolute best friends.

Beth has connected... well, obviously she is WAY BETTER at connecting than I am... she has re-connected with a great bunch of women from her high school class. Eight of them went on vacation to Puerto Vallarta in February.

I strongly recommend it to anyone who says to themselves, "I wonder what ever happened to...???"

This happened on Facebook?

Dave, it is a great thing........but they blew it on Privacy. When I start going to websites and they pop up ads that have an embedded picture of one of my 40 friends on facebook........telling me that "Your friend bought this camera" I start to get a little freaked out by it...........

I have to tell you, I miss it. I miss talking to my friends in Columbus and Charlotte, and California almost every day. But I just made a decision that it was way too invasive.

There is a great debate going on right now about owning your "Online Identity" Facebook users have abdicated that right..............

The privacy thing caused me far more hesitation than asking folks to be a friend. Only did two of those before I bolted. The privacy thing, even with oodles of controls in place--still was bothering me.

Dave, I remember when Beth went with her friends on their trip. She left you "home alone."

Yes... home alone. Good thing it wasn't Christmas, huh?

Only one person other than myself from my high class is on facebook. The class behind me has a bunch. I guess was born a year too early.

Goren,

That you have found and have found you thus far. It is a very interesting proposition... a network that spins up slowly but gains speed. Of course, it helps if you went to a big school.

I can only assume that the Virginia City Muckers class of 1960 with their typical graduating class of like 10 could meet in a diner (at the counter).

I have lived away from US for most of the last 12 years and find some fascination with the threat of identity theft and associated privacy concerns. What has changed between then and now people are so reluctant to disclose information?

For our international audience, Canadians especially, I am interested to understand more.

Interesting question. I may be an atypical Canadian (or just atypical :) ) but I don't think so. My question would be the opposite, Why would you want to share so much with people you don't know who, for the most part, have not yet shared anything with you? Identity theft can be a real nightmare if it's done so thoroughly that you must prove that you are you. Think about how you would go about doing that.
In the last 8 years or so, as but one example, my credit card has been compromised 5 times. 3 times just as a precaution (someone hacked a vendor we had dealt with and may have had our cc number) and twice because someone had actually made a complete duplicate of the card (i.e. complete with logos, coloring, mag stripe, holograph, embedded chip etc.) and was using it to ring up merchandise at a Walmart(!) in Texas. I check my balance frequently and I caught the first instance of fraud, the CC company caught the second. Imagine if they had a driver's licence, passport and a bank account number. Find a good private investigator and ask them to dig up what they can about you. I bet you will be amazed at what can de discovered about you without your knowledge.

Knave,

Good points.

I recall watching a TV show where a security expert said that he could hack almost everyone's accounts if he had their important dates: birthdays, anniversary, children's birthdays, etc. People just post those everywhere.

Personally, I am way smarter than that! I used your birthday! Ha-ha. Nobody will figure that out. ;)

I like Facebook and did get in touch with some old friends there...until I became one of the people who got their account hijacked. Suddenly I had friends asking why I was spamming them. No MAJOR harm done but a lot of inconvenience that I didn't need.

DaveI shut down my facebook page. In fact many of my real friends, not these facebook wannabes, have closed down theirs as well.
The " I wonder what is up with ( fill in the blank) means nothingot me. There's a reason why there are people I have not talked to in 30 years or more... I don't want to.
IMO facebook is the electronic Duncan Yo-yo..A fad that I hope fades away.

the women in my office appear to be on facebook 24/7, looking at pictures. I am tall and can't help but to see into everyones cube where other people can't. And I creep quietly like a ninja. I have seen Facebook described as at heart just a picture sharing site, I'd agree with that.

A couple of the guys at work sneakily look at lots of pictures too, but not the facebook kind.

DaveI just got tired of my facebook "friends" posting about how they bathed their dog or went to the grocery store.
Hey, that's just me. Saw a news story that Facebook has eclipsed the 500 million member level. Ok, that's cool. I have my prefernces and others have theirs.

This past weekend I went to a HS reunion in NY and it was all coordinated through Facebook. It was a 70's reunion (I am class of 74) and it was unbelievable. Facebook itself is at times tedious and annoying (how interested am I that one of my friends just got home and is watching TV with a glass of wine) but the ability to connect with people from long ago is amazing. I feel truly blessed after this weekend.

In terms of identity theft, never had that yet- thank God! I do think it's a young person's medium though. I've done that same High School search thing and you need to get into this millenium before you see significant increases. I couldn't find ANYONE from mine, although this might happen if you finished High School before Woodstock- the original occurred!

I am very vanilla on it, with a very small group of friends and family members. I rarely accept anybody else and probably could cut half a dozen off. I happen to run in a number of different circles in life and when FB finally arrived for me, I quickly realized that I didn't necessarily want all of those separate interest groups linked up with and through me.

I have a few close friends on FB, half a dozen of which are young women in their 30s and yes- ALL known to my wife.;) I & they use FB mostly to be able to share some pictures of their new babies/ vacations/ etc. I used to play Scrabulous with one of these close friends before we got the boot.

I'm by no means a Luddite and while I can see the benefits of some blogs on specific topics ( like a couple of Al's here), the constant need to expose oneself daily in them, strikes me as narcissistic to say the least. As for Twitter or other instant digital expressions, let's just say that I highly doubt that I'm going to be seeing a unique 'E=MC2' thought anytime soon! The idea that anyone would have an interest in ones instant bizaare mutterings, strikes me as inane as well as insane.

BTW, ALL of these named medium, including this forum and any others devoted to gambling/porn/politics are strictly forbidden at my worksite. They are all blocked on the LAN and attempted continued attempts to access them would certainly be relayed to Mgt. It shocks me that any reasonably sized business wouldn't do the same.
