View Full Version : The Smile Sprint

A 13 horse field for a sprint looks like a good handicapping challenge for Saturday. Just got my PPs and this one looks nice and Big Drama likely gets overbet here. Going to have to look at it a while as sprints aren't my specialty, so this race will be a good one for me to learn from the discussion.

As good as this one looks though, too bad the July Cup was run Friday at Newmarket. World class race. One of these days I'm going to pick one from over there. Its a good challenge if you've never considered European racing. I think I would have chosen the Princess Roonie over this one, but Calder allowing that Nicky Boy horse to enter leaves a bit of a bad taste on that one.

An initial look makes Snapshot and Go Go Shoot look a little interesting, but need to work out the dynamics a bit before I rush to judgement. Get your PPs, weigh in and let's do a little capping.

I know on paper he seems overmatched, but I like Golden Spikes in here. First time Dutrow, hasn't missed a beat in the morning since April and if the horse wasn't doing well, I don't think he'd be there. It's going to take a giant form reversal, but he does have some back class and I've seen stranger things happen at Calder.

The race seems like it almost has to collapse with all of the speed. I'm betting Golden Spikes to win and using in exactas with Not For Silver, Mambo Meister and Congressional Page.

Tough race, but CONGRESSIONAL PAGE is 5/5 at the distance, runs well fresh, and has decent Beyers. Probably won't get 8-1, but he figures close if he takes to Calder.

I'm going with Go Go Shoot. I think he is fast enough to outrun the other speed early, even Big Drama, and I'm not enthused with any of the off the pace types.

Tough one Al .
can't pick one or two so here's my list after my eliminations/
Snapshot
GoGo Shoot
Big Drama
Not For Silver
The other day I had Tagarub instead of NFS , but looking at the
pp's again , I'm sticking with these.
Just not sure yet who I want on top.

Big Drama stands out to me. That comeback race was razor sharp and his sprint record is impeccable. I would include Snapshot and Congressional Page underneath.

Mambo Meister just gets up..

I've looked at the race a few times now and come to some conclusions. First, there is a large amount of early types drawn inside, so anyone that is a need to lead type like Taqarub and Go Go Shoot is probably a bad bet. I would prefer a presser in this sort of race. I think I'd like Snapshot a lot, but the outside draw may be a little tough on him. I have no idea what to make of Mambo Meister, who has run well at the track, but never run at the distance. I really didn't want to like Big Drama, but the more I look, the better he looks and he has done very well at the track and distance.

In the end I think I have to go with Congressional Page on top. He looks to be the best 6f horse here and his last out was a very fine effort. Under and over as a saver I will use Big Drama and also Snapshot strictly under. I think it may also be worth using Hows Your Halo strictly underneath at a big price, especially off the sharp works following his season debut.

The only reason I'm considering Go Go Shoot is that my numbers have him quite a bit faster than all but Big Drama early, and he does have an edge on him as well. These races are historically won near the front if memory serves me.

The Summit of Speed is usually the summit of sh*t for me. I will try Causeway's Kin underneath looking for a nice score. Figurewise this horse has really come to hand this year. Barn is deadly on the cutback and he has a sharp recent work....maybe stay within hailing distance of the frontrunners and finish up for a share...???

Calder does tend to give a pretty good tell on how the surface is playing. It will be a must to see the races leading up to this one because if the merry go round effect is in play again, you are dead on with that.

This is my stab at it. I like Congressional Page and Snapshot to win. Big Drama, and the rest, I'll take underneath. For this race I'm leaving Mambo Meister out of the top 3. I may also have a flyer on Golden Spikes if I can get more than 15-1.

I got a reminder on my calendar last week that said "DO NOT PLAY THE SUMMIT OF SPEED!" that I entered last year after this card.

That said, in the spirit of things, I'll box

:8::10::11:

and play :8: and :10: to win.

Looks like the track has been fair but the locals have been strong. Edge to Big Drama maybe? We shall see soon!

Dud for me with locals rolling in on top. Feel moderately happy I could find a 70-1 to hit the board, but that and a buck fifty gets me a buck fifty. Any luck out there?

I'm at a bit of a loss what to put up tomorrow. Half tempted to give a go to the G3 jumps race at Colonial. Never played one but class handicapping could work. Willing to take suggestions though so if anyone can find a good one let me know.

Finger Lakes is dark on Sundays, so that narrows the field down.
