The game is not going to die, but some of its tracks certainly will.

My belief is that the game will contract and then be re-born as a single business entity. It could be Magna or CDi that pulls this off, but not without a lot of directional change.

Some will be smart enough to re-invent themselves. We (HorseStreet) have to do the same thing. The HorseStreet operation six months from now will probably be quite different from what we are now.

Adapt or die. It is that simple.

This game will die about the same time as the oft buried baseball. Of course if it does happen I no longer will have to hear this sort of talk, so that may in itself be a bonus

I agree that that game is not going to die, but it is possible that it could be dramatically different in the future as there will almost assuredly be material changes.

If the game were to die (or become completely unpalatable) I guess I would go back to playing polo or maybe finally learn to play hockey.

I'll play that horse race game at the state fair, where you keep pushing the button to make your horse go around the fastest. Then I'll win a big stuffed animal instead of $3.20 on a 3/5 drug addled nag.

I play a little poker, but I wouldn't play any other gambling. And Online poker, no way!

I play the horses because it is different. I love the challenge. I don't play and have never played Blackjack or Craps or anything else in spite of spending plenty of time in Vegas over the years. I spent it in the race book.

who am I to speak the truth?

Let's just start with the fact that almost NO body is involved (from the mainstream) in what we may call a sport. They just don't participate. That sounds like a "problem" to me.

Standardbreds? Hunt seat? Western?

I know the people heavily involved in other horse sports believe them to be just as exciting as racing, and maybe they are once you get into them, but I would just as soon not be forced to ever find out.

My goal is to end up like the man who was my mentor (and who I still work with every day and has become like a grandfather to me). He has always been strictly small-time, but after 50 years in the sport he is today 74 and still gets up before 4:00am every day to head to the barn, still handles any kind of horse, gets excited by a new 2 year-old, loads hay and straw, and is absolutely as tough as nails (I would back him with a bet in arm-wrestling against half the posters on this forum-- any age.) Watching him stay at it every morning is a real kick in the pants to me, because I am not convinced that I am even as tough as him today, much less when I get to be his age.

Long live horse racing!

I wouldn't be doing anything different that I am now...but there would be a huge hole in my life without racing...I'd spend time re living the good old days...I'd feel mighty sad about it....but...IMO...it ain't going no where. Changes, yes, less tracks, yes...but it will survive.

Eventually the game is going to die. There are not enough young people in the game for it so sustain itself 15 or 20 yrs from now.

Adapt or die. It is that simple.dave that idea probably wouldn't be such a bad idea. i say this all the time that all the raing game needs to thrive is accountability. with all the different state laws and different ownership of racetracks that can't agree on anything to make changes, churchill is probably the only solution. from the recent merger of ubet and rebate shop it seems like that is their ultimate game plan.

Definitely the market. 5 years ago I probably focused 5 times as much on horse race handicapping. Now I spend 5 times more on following the market than horse racing.

Probably leave the country... with Great Britain the most likely place to settle down- wouldn't have to fight the language barrier there. Plus the freedom to place a bet on almost any corner- bookies. The beer is great over there too, to speak nothing of the fish and chips.

But I don't think it will come to that. I've been hearing for the last 20 years the game is going away. And still, I'm at it practically everyday.

There is no way that mankind can get separated from the equine spirit and sport of racing in my lifetime.

The bond between man and horse, and the question of who will win the horserace goes back - what a couple of thousand years, maybe more?

I don't think that the outlook has ever been as bleak as it is right now.

It's easy to blame the economy...but there have been depressions and recessions before, and this game passed all those economic "tests" with flying colors. In fact, the game was considerd to be depression and recession proof.

Things appear to be really different this time...

A dwindling racehorse population - which is racing less frequently than ever before, an ever-declining national mutuel handle, illegal drugs, synthetic surfaces, together with leadership which defies description...

Tough to be an optimist if you are a horseplayer these days...
