It was just last July that the champion got to move to Old Friends. He was only 24, but, once again, laminitis won. RIP, Black Tie Affair.

One of my favorites. It seems like yesterday (1990) when I saw him wire the field in the Hawthorne Gold Cup, and 91 when he bet a good field impressively in the Washington Park Handicap at AP. It would have been nice if Juvenal Diaz was given the opportunity to ride him in his Breeders Cup win instead of Bailey. RIP Black Tie Affair.

Yet I can't find an article about him, not on bloodhorse.com. RIP, sire of wonderful, wonderful Evening Attire.

Thanks for the link. I feel bad for Dee Poulos,he was their horse of a lifetime. She doesn't win many races now but she truly loves her horses. Hope she goes on a winning tear at AP.

I felt deep sorrow when I read this...I think everyone loved Black Tie, and my heart breaks for his Dee Poulos and everyone at Old Friends.
I didn't know he had developed Laminitus...myGod, when are we going to find a cure for this thing...it takes more lives than anything else.

She knew, that was sad.

Yes...I suppose he's been fighting the Laminitus since back in June when she visited with him...heart breaking, just heart breaking.

What a joy it was to watch Black Tie Affair. Wiring the Hawthorne Gold Cup was truly a spectacle, and he beat a very good field, including runner-up Mi Selecto. Ernie Poulous got him ready for that by galloping him 3 miles every day for a month. RIP

the above photo is included with the Old Friends newsletter I get...it was part of the sad announcment about Black Tie Affair.

I think this photo is incredible...it captures the old horse's soul, his eye so soft, kind and inquisitive.
I am very sad about his passing, and wanted to post one more time...this photo seems a good memorial in his honor.
Also, below find a link to Blowen's story about Black Tie's passing...

What`s the old adage, a picture is worth a thousand words? That pretty well sums it up.

Thanks for the picture Joanied.

I loved this guy as well...probably because I loved him in the BC Classic in 1991 and he didn't disappoint me...always held a fondness for him through the years...sad to read he had to battle laminitis in the end...

That was an outstanding race (one of Bailey's great rides)...I agree, it's a crime he had to suffer through that damned Laminitus.
He was simply wonderful.
