As one that is basically agnostic.....I didn't find this funny really,,but quite ironic? Maybe............ I wouldn't wish this on anyone. Good Luck Mr. Hitchens

An Update from Christopher Hitchens
by Christopher Hitchens June 30, 2010, 4:00 PM

I have been advised by my physician that I must undergo a course of chemotherapy on my esophagus. This advice seems persuasive to me. I regret having had to cancel so many engagements at such short notice.

And, as I sit here listening to Beethoven's 5th Symphony (cranked), yet another reminder of the way of all flesh.

I wish him a quick recovery.

Dave, I believe that the story is written about a guy who is a self pro-claimed atheist. Some of the comments lean that way I would think.

Sorry Dave, It was a little vague. Hitchens is a vociferous Atheist and goes on Television and radio every chance he gets and demeans organized Religion and calls those who follow any Religion a fool. In spite of that fact I enjoy his writings most of the time. Not that I am any fan of organized Religion, I do make a point to never demean anyone who follows a Religion and have great respect for those who gain strength from a faith. But I sometimes cringe a little at some of the stuff Hitchens says (http://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/3956.Christopher_Hitchens) He is a little "off center" lately becoming the curmudgeonly type. He used to be a Left winger but has moved around a bit over the years.

He has written a book called the portable aethist (http://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/3956.Christopher_Hitchens), also "God is not great: How Religion poisons everything" and here is his Wiki Page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Hitchens)

He was accused of being a Neocon after 9-11 and went on a very entertaining writing period where he was pretty hard on the Religion of Peace. All in All a very entertaining "bloke"

I have seen him on TV alot. I thought he was pretty boring. That snooty English accent of his doesn't help when he doesn't bring much to the table to begin with.

The Ayatollah of Atheism.

I do like his quote:

"The governor of Texas, who, when asked if the Bible should also be taught in Spanish, replied that 'if English was good enough for Jesus, then it's good enough for me."
— Christopher Hitchens (/author/quotes/3956.Christopher_Hitchens)

Independent on his snooty British accent and views on organized religion, Hitchens has a brilliant mind. He is an excellent writer and offers strong philosophical challenges to those of us, and I include myself here, who believe in God. He has the supposed "Religion of Peace" very accurately pegged.
Also, along with Richard Dawkins, Hitchens wants the Pope arrested and charged with child rape crimes when the Pontiff comes to England.
Whether or not one agrees with him, Hitchens brings a lot to the table.
I'll say a prayer for him.

It's all simple concrete materialism eh. Just scientific fact or what you see is what you get. There's no such thing as abstraction, essence, or divinity for people who hold that belief.

I suspect that a reader like yourself has read Hitchens.
If you haven't, he's a regular contributor at Slate.com

Which Governor of Texas?

Allegedly:

Before I talk about promoting peace, I will tell a story that illustrates a basic cause of conflict. There was a hot argument in Texas in the 1920s—one that is still going on in several states, particularly in California—about whether Spanish should be used in the classroom to teach kids who came from Mexico, or whether only English should be permitted. Miriam “Ma” Ferguson had become the state’s first woman governor, after her husband, Governor “Pa” Ferguson was impeached. She ended the debate quite quickly when she held up a Bible and proclaimed, “If the King’s English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it’s good enough for the children of Texas!”

Moving interview. I hope he survives the cancer or if not, doesn't suffer too much.
