The starter is supposed to have a "book" on all the horses coming up to the barrier so as to anticipate potential trouble. The opener today had the three inside horses standing getting agitated while the assistant starters had to FIND the big favorite who ran third by the way.
IF one causes that big a delay they should pull them all out as these were inexperienced maidens.

People make mistakes. One mistake does not deserve the label of "incompetence."

The "book" is always a work in progress...horses have been known to be a tad unpredicatable.

Let's say they don't take their job too seriously then.

This, and "incompetence" are total overreactions.

May your 20,860th post be more reasonable than labeling the gate crew as "incompeten[t]" generally.
If your experience leads you to believe that the gate crew was incompetent for one race, fine. Like Schwartz posted above, people make mistakes.
I do not expect perfection.
A new first, starting a thread to redboard gate experience.

I could just as easily have redboarded surfing, stamp collecting, eating tacos, buying mayonnaise, visiting Caliente, playing the piano, visiting the Statue of Liberty's head, etc.
Having done something, ANYTHING in your insane book, is to somehow label it a negative to detract from the idea of knowing it first hand which I DO having worked on the gate for two seasons.
Being up close and personal is not the same as making comments as a grandstander.

Passing judgment when you know very few facts was poor. It doesn't matter if you worked on the gate for two years, ten, or a hundred. Maybe they had a book and it was accurate. Maybe, a horse that has behaved well in the past decided not to do so today. They are horses, not machines. In any case, messing up one race (in your opinion) should hardly have them labeled as incompetent.
Your last comment is you just trying to preach from the pulpit again. Nobody cares. Many here have lots of experience around horses. They just don't feel the need to spout off about it. That doesn't make them a grandstander, and even if a person is one, whatever it actually is, why is that bad? Maybe I'm wrong, but I was about 98% sure this thread was started so you could mention working on the gate at that mecca of racing, Hastings Park. It took a few more posts then I thought for it to appear.

I have followed Colonial Down's meet this year. I did not get to see the opener today, and can't comment on that. From what I have seen (from my computer desk) it doesn't look like they have had many problems overall at the meet.

I have no comment on this as you are the pro here. But I want to know- right or wrong, what makes the decision as to taking all out? Some refusing to settle down?
