Uuuh, I think it's against my religion to even ponder over which one might have been better. I just can't go there in my head.

Both SRV and Hendrix, two of the all time best. :faint:

Two of my other favs; Duane and Warren. Nuthin better.

Gee whiz, I love 'em both. Don't make me choose.

But, to answer the question: neither.

Gotta go with Hendrix.

How about Ritchie Blackmore vs Tony Iommi?

Hendrix. Not even close. I don't even like Stevie.

I was working the student union back in 68 taking tickets at the door for a concert. Some guy was up on stage biting his guitar, playing it behind his back and overwhelming the crowd. I asked "Who is this guy?" Hendrix was the answer and at that point I said "never heard of him."

I would take Carlos Santana over SRV, or even Jeff Beck, or Clapton, but Hendrix gets the nod here......

I can't for the life of me find a tip-top post by Falconridge about sizing-up artistic endeavors.

F'ridge hep me, hep me.

This is like trying to figure out if Rembrandt or Michalangelo was a better artist.

I was in the front row at a SRV concert when he sat down on the edge of the stage right in front of me, playing a long solo at the end of "Life Without You". Tears were streaming down his face as he pulled notes I never knew existed out of his soul...maybe music that was inspired by Hendrix.

Wow, hard to believe it's been 20 yeards since he died. Saw him in concert with Eric Clapton in Landover, MD in late July or early August 1990, just about 1 month before the helicopter crash.

I love both of those guys, plus the other guitarists as well. I think that anytime you compare 2 guitarist that to be fair they have to be in the same style and even further in the same era. ie : i would compare Hendrix with maybe Jimmy Page. Clapton vs Beck.... Rhoads vs Jake E Lee vs Zakk Wylde ( all ozzy axmen ) Like horses, guitarist from different eras with different styles is a hard thing to compare, or you end up with the Segovia/Benson/Vai/Les Paul/Paul Gilbert etc etc Battle Royal rbj

I would have to pick Jimi because I like his songs better, but Stevie Ray was an amazing talent too.

I saw Stevie Ray open for The Who at the Cotton Bowl in the early 80's. He was great...........that Pete Townshend fellow wasn't too bad either!

RR in a landslide!!

There are a tons of better guitarists better than SRV and Hendrix. It just happens to be what style of guitar player you prefer. These were some of my favorites back when I used to play guitar (over 25 years):

Jimmy Page
Clapton
Jeff Beck
Uli Roth
Tony Iommi
Ynqwie Malmsteen
Steve Vai
Adrian Smith and Dave Murray from Iron Maiden
Marty Freidman, Dave Mustaine from Megadeth
Zakk Wylde
George Lynch
Brad Gillis
Warren Demartini
Joe Satriani
Edward Van Halen
Jake E Lee

A jazz guitarist?

Idonthinkso.

Loved Les Paul but without him we probably wouldn't have had to endure the crap Hendrix played.

little wing isn't crapNo, nor is All Along the Watchtower. Dylan liked it better than his own version.

30 years ago I would have said Hendrix, 20 years ago SRV (Just to keep the thread sort of on track :) ).

Along the way I have heard so many excellent guitar players that, as many have already said, it's hard to pick a favorite because our choices are all wrapped up in what styles of music speak to us.
My 2 favorites right now are Robben Ford and Michael Hedges (RIP).
