I'm not exaggerating when I say Solis went every bit of 8 wide.

I'm not exaggerating when I say Solis went every bit of 8 wide.

If you reverse the Jockeys on the first two finishers the #8 wins no problem. The winner did go from Kerwin John to Joel Rosario and that's about as big a rider switch as there is today.

Solis is just way too careful and indecisive. All he had to do was sit back and make one big run but he moved into a bad spot on the backstretch. It wasn't a horrible ride but you could see him on the backstretch looking like he didn't know what the hell he was gonna do. Solis = Tentative and that's not good for a supposedly top Jockey.

even worse, i had Lori D pegged this morning. I saw him break his maiden at santa anita and knew that john gave him a shitty ride last time and he was 10x better than that. he's a legit graded stakes horse. but when i saw bogie i knew he was the better horse.

so i talked myself off the winner, to get a shittastic ride, and beat by the horse, that i had this morning, and i KNOW that i still picked the right horse.

Right now, I'd take Kerwin John over Solis.
That was not a good ride.

I had an absolute bomb on john earlier in the meet. every bit of 35 to 1 at least.

He's been like that for a long time. He gets jittery whenever there is traffic.

Eddie D. had the same problem, imo, in his last few years.
You knew if Eddie got behind near the inside, he was never going to risk trying to get through a tight gap. Your chances on that horse were gone.
Eddie was a great jock in his prime, as was Solis.

Seems, though, once they have had bad injuries, and retirement is getting nearer, they tend to be very cautious. To win with those veteran types riding, the horse has to get a clear trip, and be much the best.

Doug O'Neill put K.Johns up on a live horse last Wednesday.
He was in for a 40k tag - 10-1 on the M/L, he hadn't shown much first out. He got bet down to under 4-1. They knew something.

KJ popped the gate with him, and wired the field.
He rides just fine, if he's got the horse under him, imo.

Yes, I think he's a decent rider. no long term issues against him but he gave LD a crappy ride at Golden Gate in the stake race. it happens. but overall he rides hard and usually doesn't make horrible decisions. Solis and Smith are what i call the cash-money-burners.

Agreed.
Both riders fit the profile of veterans who have suffered major injuries.
If they're on much the best horse, they should still win.
If not, they won't do you any favors.

i paid rent off that score i know that. I hit two bombs at the meet.. one was like 70 to 1 and one was 34 to 1 on a friday night. i dont' know who rode who. i think john might have been the 71 to 1 one.

the worst, wager in horse racing, is mike smith on the fav in the last at hollywood park/santa anita/ del mar.

he will be in a 13 horse field, on some horse, that i guess he is riding as a favor or something to someone, and there will be a bunch of no name jockies in the race, and he will get a bunch of play, and usually go off as the first or second choice.i can count on one hand the amount of times i've seen him win the last.

solis has his moments and sometimes his horse IS that good. Tanda for instance is that good. You just have to deal with solis in that regard, becuase he's on the best. Z the same for mike smith ovbiously.

No kidding? Solis was way overrated when he was young, and for the last 3 or 4 years he has been the worst jockey in the S CA circuit hands down, when on the best horse he will go as wide as possible and win the race after the wire,a few months ago he was taken to school by Atkinson of all people i don't know who gave him the idea that he was good enough to try the majors back east,i don't think he lasted a month, retire already, i have no idea why Galagher rides the bum, he must like the agony of defeat.:lol::lol::lol:

Alex is a nice guy who has a lot of lifetime wins, trainers don't watch the races on a daily basis, and they certainly don't watch them as serious students of handicapping....all they know is that he's Alex Solis and that he's won a few big races in his career...that's good enough for most people.

I thought the horse ran great and have no beef with the ride, sure I would in retrospect wish he tried to stay inside and wait for a opening but no guarantee he gets one, but for sure he wins if he does, but that's why its called "horse racing" BTW I needed the 8 or the 9 for the money......

I'm not upset or calling the raced fixed, i knew lori was gonna get over looked and knew he could flat run. i'm pissed becuase, i still had the best horse, and it's ovbious to anyone with 2 eyes who ws the best horse in that race.

i would rather lose a race, with a jockey trying to save ground then trying to do what he did.

if you are going to go that wide don't move on the turn when you are going to get fanned out. that's what peeved me off more than anything.

You have described Solis' special move, fanning out the widest on the turn. He must have cost his mount six lengths with the patented move.

I'm sure he could afford a fair-sized ranch/vineyard somewhere.

what was so bad about the ride? I just watched the replay........looked like the normal kind of ride a huge closer gets? Rosario got first run.......and kept him inside like he is supposed to .......Rosario rode a good race.......but I don't think the ride Alex gave the horse was anything out of the ordinary for a huge closer......they always end up having to go around........ no big deal

No it wasn't anything out of the ordinary for Solis, he does that w/ almost every horse he rides, go wide and make sure you lose the race.

you don't wait until the turn to make your move. you will get fanned. you either move before or after the turn. when you move on the turn you cost yourself so much that you will lose the race 9 out of 10 times unless you just are on the absolute stand out in the field. espically on a mile track with sharp turns like that. it can be somewaht forgiven on a track like belmont. not on a bull ring / mile track. all it takes is the horse in the 3 path to come out a path to cost you the race in that instance.

you wait unil the turn has cleared, at least you dont' have to go too wide, instead you angle out. angling out will not cost you as much as going wide will.

I wouldn't call it a horrible ride but it was a typical Solis ride. Mediocre.

When you lose with him you always feel he didn't try hard enough. He has a reputation for not being aggressive enough and being scared to go through holes that a top Jockey has to go through. A lot of guys won't ride him on their horses, especially after a couple of years ago when he admitted to riding scared for the previous few years. Like it or not that's his reputation for the last five years.

I don't disagree But in this case I think there were no holes

No there weren't any holes. If Rosario was on the horse he would have moved a split second sooner coming into the stetch even though it would have been a little dangerous. Rosario most likely wins with the same trip while Solis gets second.

Agreed. I had a little ($20) on the horse. Solis looks tentative the whole way and then decides to get fanned out so far, I thought for a second he was stopping in the clubhouse for a beer.

After reading some of these posts, I watched the Will Rodgers and specifically Solis, and I'm going to have to disagree with the majority assessment of his ride in that race.

Perhaps he's not as daring riding the rail or shooting into a hole due to recent injuries ( he broke his back a few years back) but in the case of the Will Rodgers I don't think he had much choice - there was wall of horses in front of him, and I saw no hole to shoot through, nor did I notice one opening up later in the stretch. Also, from what I saw, he was not 8 wide around the turn but 3-4 wide with horses on his inside - he fanned out 8 wide entering.

As I saw it, the biggest thing that caused his defeat was the fact that the winner drifted out slightly in the stretch which caused him to shift out and loose momentum briefly. Without that I think he still gets up.

The winner was wider on both turns than Bogie. Solis was giving Bogie the same ride as Rosario. The difference was that Rosario kept Solis inside of him and kept him buried behind #5. Otherwise they make their run together and who knows what happens. Both were aided by a good pace.

The difference was Rosario had a plan and asked his mount for run at the proper time. Solis did not anticipate any moves and had no business being that wide directly behind a wall of horses on the final turn.

I don't think 3-4 around the final turn is that uncommon for a deep closer. He had horses inside of him which would have prevented him from diving at any hole that may have opened. I don't see how he could have done anything other than what he did. There was a wall of horses coming down the stretch, so I don't think he would have gotten through.

I saw it the same way Dan did, Rosario kept Solis pinned in all down the backstretch and was able to make his move earlier. Good race riding and not a bad horse either, only his second route race and looks like he can be placed anywhere.

In other words SOLIS riding the best horse, went wide and taken to school by an other rider, what else is new w/ him, not long ago someone on this board was asking why Solis is not in the hall of fame. to quote ALA Jim Mora, HALL OF FAME, HALL OF FAME ,YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING.:lol:

I agree three wide would not have been a problem.

Vic called the winner being fanned 5 wide, and Solis was directly behind Rosario. So Solis was at least 5 wide on the turn prior to the top of the stretch.

If Solis was only three wide he would have had options of looking for a hole to develop or angling out in the stretch.

Solis had no plan nor anticipation. It was a bad ride.

this.

what really pisses me off, is he is auto wide now,.

he had an OPTION. to go inside. it's like he doesn't even think about it anymore.

I have never gotten mad at a jockey for losing a race by trying to save ground. at least he's trying.
it was a horrible ride.

When?? The only hole I saw inside occurred just after entering the stretch after Solis had already decided to go wide - and it closed quickly. On the turn, the horse to Solis's inside was making his move so I don't think Alex could have cleared and made it through any hole down on the rail, which meant he would have been stuck behind a wall of horses and as it turned out it was a wall for most of the stretch.

I will agree if Rosario intent was to pin Solis in he did a good job. As is, I still think Solis would have gotten up had he been a little wider in the stretch so that he would not have been bothered when Rosario shifted out slightly at the 1/16 pole.
