I am a horseplayer...I only play horses. I don't gamble on sports, lotto,. quick picks, scratch-offs, casino games and all other forms of gambling. I do play in a family card game two or three times a year. but my point is clear HORSES only.

Next time you are at the track listen to all the talk of all the other forms of gambling most horseplayers are involved with on a regular basis. My intention is not to condem these players...it's just not for me.

Any opinions on this topic?

The term "real horseplayer" should have more to do with the seriousness with which the horseplayer approaches this game, and not with whether or not he "indulges" in other games of chance.

I have no argument with serious horseplayers who also play other games...my arguments are with the "twice-a-month" know-it-alls, who masquerade as "real horseplayers", while fighting with us about things like the significance of the game's high take-out on our financial well-being.

Not a character flaw. Just like the action. It is what it is..

Funny story years ago drinking a few cold ones with some friends. One friend in particular was "a gambler" . That night while playing cards, after a day at Aqueduct and a night at Roosevelt Raceway, questioned who won the pro fight that night, along with the lotto numbers etc. What really got us laughing was when he stated quite seriously"I gamble in every sense of the word." Yes, he did. Never got into any trouble with his passion so I say go for it if it pleases...

Hmm.....So those of us who have jobs or careers that say, bet the horses only on the weekends are automatically less knowledgable or to a greater extent, less worthy? As though we don't belong in the same room as the "serious horse player"? We who don't pound the windows or sped the entire day on the computer every day on 5 or 10 different tracks don't know squat?
Take this with you as you walk through your day..."Every man is my teacher in that I may learn soemthing from him"...That and a good solid dose of humility.
Good luck and good evening.

What about the ones who follow daily, but only wager twice a month, and it is more than you wager over 6 months? ;)

I have a friend who will gamble on anything. If you're in the car with him, approaching a traffic light, he'll try to get you to bet if it'll turn red when before we get there. :D

I don't think he was implying that at all. It's the people who rarely if ever bet, yet are in the middle of every conversation about betting that is here that I think he was referring to.

Huh?
Everything you do in life is a gamble, including going to bed.
The only thing I bet money on is horses.
At any track or OTB there are many like me.
If you haven't met them, I'm wondering who you've ever met?

perhaps...I may have taken his comments out of context. It is my wish for HIM to state that. I apologize to you, and to all the bettors who might be offended by my comments.

Like Dahoss already stated, my criticism was not directed against the infrequent player...I was referring to those players who, although they play very infrequently, or not at all...always find themselves in every argument regarding issues like mutual take-out, steward incompetence, racetrack management, and other horseplayer complaints.

The serious horseplayers, whether frequent bettors or not, should know enough about the game to recognize what is beneficial to us, and what is detrimental to our success and our longevity in the game.

I have never met anyone who only bets the horses, although I have met people who claimed it, only to catch them at a crap table or playing blackjack. They always that craps or blackjack was just fun so it didn't count, but the horse racing was serious business.:bang:

I have bet every game of chance offered and can honestly say none compare to horse racing and thats why I play 3-5 days a week. I enjoy slots/tables on occasion for a night out at the casino and used to be a big sports bettor but the grind is more harsh on you at least it was in my case. I am 24 and hope this game outlives me.

Ok then..We're all square.
Even though I bet the horses far less than I'd like to, I keep myself abreast of the latest news, I do my handicapping homework, I know a lot about the sport.
I don't have the budget to wager what I consider a lot of money.
To me, successful wagering begins and ends with proper money management.
AT the end of the day I am a low budget player. You may bet thousands in a week. It takes me all year to do that. But we may use the same handicapping methods , pay attention to the same angles, etc.
So there ya have it.
Good luck to you!

I seldom play the lottery, unless the jackpot is large. I know that is is almost certain I won't win, but it's a definite certainty that you can't win if you don't play. A buck here and there.
