Wait till Frank lays out his plan for California at the next CHRB meeting on June 22nd. We might see a few more leave after that.

Sorry, I originally posted Wednesday's card was cancelled...I meant Thursday's card...June 17
Tomorrow's card (Wednesday) has of course already been drawn and the entries are out there on Equibase, so you're good to go for Wednesday...but not Thursday...

Following this past weekend's card you would guess that the well is dry....
Many of us westcoast types know that Hollyweird is ALWAYS the pits and fields are ALWAYS short.... it's a good thing that they are cancelling cards.
Let's do the Monmouth model.

They are almost on the Monmouth model by default.

They have allocated popular horsemen too many barn spaces and the Trainers do not want one of their owners to contest with another owner in the same barn... without a short field, in which everyone gets a check, no matter what.
It is more than that, but there are enough horses, and the TOC has no incentive program to fill the fields. Horses stay in the subsidized barns and some never race, with one excuse after another. The Racing Secretary can not ask them to race or leave...because the Trainer may take the whole string elsewhere, making the conditions worse.
The business model is broken.
They are almost on the Monmouth model by default.
Well, minus the purse money.

I'll get right on that, Chief. :)

Is the problem temporary lack of entries, long-term decline in how often 1 horse can race, or lousy condition book?

Whatever the problem is, where Calif is concerned, it is NOT TEMPORARY!

California Racing is at the point of no return.
There is nothing on the Horizon to be optimistic about out here. The CHRB meeting on June 22nd will most likely be a fiasco. I'm thinking Frank is gonna ask to raise the take to pay for the new surface at Santa Anita if he can't get someone else to pay.

Well, minus the purse money.
And the field size.
And the dirt.
Other than that though...
NOW you are on to a major part of the truth and this is going on at more and more tracks. The small guy can't compete with many of these large strings and they just run over them with quantity.

That would be the major and perhaps final blow to California Racing.
The ones to pay for a new dirt track should be the ones who
created this mandate in the first place.
If you hit someone's car and total it. You buddy - have to pay up.
CHRB should be that "buddy".

Lack of entries...
That's bad...I don't know any other way to put it.
