How about that Sir Caviar. 1:54 and a piece today at the Meadows. Does Palone make that much of a difference or does the Master just bring them along at a snails pace as he calls the shots?

If you watch very, very carefully, you'll see Palone picking up drivers like Mike Wilder, Dick Stillings, Ray Paver, Brian Zendt, Doug Snyder, Randy Tharps, Greg Grismore, and others over a second in many instances. (Maybe the only surprise name on that list is Wilder and I'm not quite sure why that is). His improvement rate on the rest of the driving colony is not quite as great.

However, Bill Zendt, who drives very little these days, is over 60, and who drives like a catcher in a crouch is... Reminds me of something Steve Elliott said to me many years ago when an owner driver was taking himself off and putting on Mike Lachance: "This is a driver switch you can't measure with a stop watch... you need a calendar!"

The Master has always saved his horses when racing them. In the back of his mind is that they are always a commoditiy. Still feel this one has not see his best yet and will be shipping out...really do not know where but can he compete in the Open here? Palone will have his choice and if he chooses Sir Caviar for anything from the Burke or Bendis or other barn, you best be on him.

Could he rate in a two hole and be close to the 1:52 barrier by summer's end?

I believe this one can.

Your thoughts?

Clearly, this is a quality horse and time will tell where he settles. That being said, I've found that trotters in general are significantly more class "sensitive" than pacers. The reason seems to be that the very top class trotters are quick off the gate and as the racing gets faster, this positional commodity becomes more important. Sir Caviar will need to show that super quickness when he gets up the ladder. So far, he hasn't had to show it. Will he? Hard to say and that's why the jury remains out.

He continues to roll along. 4 in a row at the Meadows and headed toward the Preferred Trot.

any thoughts on his win yesterday? You guys know quite a bit about the goings on at the Meadows. but you got one thing wrong, this horse was not in the Zendt stable last year as a three year old. He was claimed in November out of a 1/3 claimer for 21K and given 3 months off.

The Zendt's send up two to Mohawk. Garcon and Sir Caviar. One won and the other finished last. Not as expected. For the first time in a long time, Sir Caviar tasted defeat by backing up through the field to finish last. Stablemate Garcon wins with closing speed at 5/1.

Amazing turn around. After shipping to Mohawk and backing through the field to finish last, Sir Caviar ships back home to the friendly confines of the Meadows and drops in the box for the Preferred Handicap and put up Palone's brother law and son of Bill, Brian Zendt who lights up the tote at 23/1.

Last week comes home in 33 and a piece to finish the mile in 1:59:3, tonight trots in 1:54 and piece and wins his 6th in a row at the Ghettos.

And they wonder why this sport is dying? Inconsistency maybe?

any number of things might have caused him to race bad at Mohawk. first time shipping, different track, different driver. they are horses, not race cars.
