The feature is the John J. Reilly Handicap.
Might be fun if no one scratches out. ;)

The weather is slated to be fine all weekend. Happy Memorial Day  everyone.

Two races ago Joey P was in for 75k and he wasn't claimed now he is running for a 100k purse with Bravo. Go Joey P.

Didn't JP have an operation a while back ? I'm thinking Whose The Cowboy in here if there's enough pace to set him up and if he looks good on track.

Yes Joey P coliced and had emergency surgery last year. In his last race the starter sprung the latch a bit too quick as he clearly wasn't ready to go.

Hmmm... some people here actually follow NJ-breds.

Let's see who is the first poster that can name this one - he's entered in The J.J. Reilly Handicap.

Thanks Steve.

The only hint I can divulge is that the grey on the track
at The Meadowlands is a gelding.

That should be enough clues for the PA detectives. :D

More of the same on Sunday's card.
Average field size before scratches 10.5.

The easiest one (and everyone worth their handicapping salt
should be able to come up with a single) is the third race on Sunday:

I will go with Amarga she is lightening quick and could be carried by a fast track. Nonna Mia has worked lights out for TAP and Catch a Thief blasted out to a huge maiden sore. Good race but if you think there is a single, go for it.

Excellent onefast99. http://i48.tinypic.com/2dilnva.gif Take a bow.

And you're right. That pic was from 2008 fall meet at The Big M.

Now just imagine what it would be like if Monmouth had a bigger track like the designs I proposed earlier:

There would be 20-horse fields in many if not most races, instead of only 12.

Joey P draws nicely in the 10 hole, sorry to say but Who's The Cowboy seems to have reached the end of his career, just think he will be too far back on a track favoring pressers up to 5 L back and he will be 10 back. A classic renewal of two old NJ bred wariors though.

Am I the only one who finds this race really interesting- one for which I will make a point to be at the Walking Ring and that I will definitely bet? I know many people hate races like this, but I love the familiarity of the horses. It's nice to be able to watch some old favorites as reliable as these. My son (5) "met" Hermosillo while against the Walking Ring rail last year. He was 99-1 that day (in the Reilly) and I didn't bet him despite what I thought was a nice physical appearance. He ran 2d. Was back for the Hesse, he looked good again, and I learned my lesson. Went $2 across (this is a bet on behalf of my 5yo son after all) and he won at 35-1. I told my son "Hermie" was running tomorrow and he said "oh yeah, number 5" (Hermie had post 4 but was mutuel #5).

Anyway, we always lament that horses don't stay around enough to build followings like John Henry and Forego had. These J-breds are the modern day variety.

It's Sat morn at 630AM and it's drizzling here 5 miles south of Monmouth Park.

If there really is a new philosophy by the management at the track then they will keep the 3 races carded for the turf on the turf and have nice sized fields.

If it's the old way of thinking they will take at least 2 races off the turf to baby the turf track for the upcoming turf stakes races this weekend (Little Silver and Eatontown).

They need 108 horses to race to average 9 per race today.
There were 22 scratches last Sunday on a dry day.
Let's see what happens today.

Also, any reason for the track to be dark yesterday?
Don't say it was a Friday in May they were opened on Fridays in May in the past.

I woke up thinking exactly the same thing about the grass races. They will lose a good chunk of whatever goodwill they built last weekend with the local parishoners.

Believe me I was praying for the race to come off the turf but it didn't and it turned out to be a great race. The rain they had at MP was minimal.
