Opening day of the ‘Elite Summer Meet’ at Monmouth Park got off to a block-buster start. A large crowd of 17,903 showed up–an increase of 74% over last year. Total handle for the day was a whopping $9,357,444–that figure is more than double what the total handle was last year on opening day. If opening day is any indication of what the rest of Monmouth Park’s ‘Elite Summer Meet’ has in store, things might finally be looking up for the future of New Jersey thoroughbred racing. People I spoke to were thrilled with the new concept of a shorter meet with better quality thoroughbred racing. There was a buzz all day at Monmouth Park. People were in great mood, and track officials were out and about with smiles on their faces from the start of the day until the end of the day. All in all it was a great day of racing at the shore. Monmouth Park will most certainly be the place to be this summer for horseman and fans alike. Below are some snap shots I took on opening day at Monmouth Park.

The water fountains are in the front of the cafeteria when you walk in the main entrance.

The picure of John Velasquez standing on the grass in the middle of the walking ring fails to identify the guy standing on the left wearing the sunglasses.

That is none other than Babalu (yeah, like the Ricky Ricardo song)...one of the true characters on the backside.

Nice shots. I'm in one with my friends under the tree in the tunnel.

Where we always are.
