I'll go early on this one. When Shoemaker rode against Sea Bird he said he just wanted to get out of the way so he didn't get run over. I will take the Shoe's opinion.

you know my first inclination was to take sea bird, but i thought better of it and went with kelso.

I had the pleasure of seeing Sea Bird run in the Epsom Derby. He dusted Meadow Court that day and Diatome could never stay with him. His Arc win was a classic when he won by daylight despite veering out badly. IMO he is the creme dela creme. Shame that he died so young.

Click on the vote tally for each horse, and you can see who voted for it (in alphabetical order by PA user name, rather than in chronological order).

Is the race clockwise or counter-clockwise?

If clockwise, I would have to argue for a runner not on your list - GLADIATEUR. He was once high-weighted at 138 pounds. The next fact would stop modern trainers in their tracks - he won 16 of his 19 starts at the age of four (if you count the two walkovers).

Much as I liked John Henry and Secretariat I can't imagine them beating the top class horses of Europe/Ireland/UK. Sea Bird.

I really wanted to vote for either Kelso or Secretariat...Secretariat woud be in a dead heat with my vote, though...I picked Ribot...undefeated and won the Arc twice...can't do much better than that!!

Any truth to the rumor Secretariat was better on turf than he was on dirt?

That's the way I see it anyway....

Sky Classic not Secretariat, he broke the great one's record in the Turf Classic.

I hope you agree with this post, or you might also lock it.

Having John Henry in the race and Exceller out is lol.

What did Kelso ever win on the turf?

The premier G! turf race in America of the time--the Washington DC International .

Nelson Bunker Hunt's Dahlia may be the biggest oversight in this thread.

Secretariat, but in a bit more of a struggle than most would think. Huge overlay Dancing Brave completes the exacta.

So that's it, one race? How many times did he lose on the turf? And no turf HOY award ever?

I know why Exceller did not win turf HOY, but he was unquestionably better than Mac Diarmida (who did win it in '78).

That post was locked not because I disagreed with it...even YOU know that...

If that were the only criteria, at least half the threads on this board about be locked, and that just isn't so....

Try again.

If it's horses racing, then Secretariats winning, assuming the worlds watching.

What a shame we never saw Affirmed, Slew or Bid on the grass

I thought it was a legitimate post, that would have brought attention to the I think 1 for 21 stat someone posted today of the Woodward. If someone had posted something similar about the classic I wouldn't have expected it to come down, regardless you are the admin here. It's your decision and I have had my 2 cents.

After watching Secretariat win the Canadian International Stakes at Woodbine on the turf I came to believe that whatever horse that might beat him on turf had yet to be sired and that was 37 years ago; and in that span a horse still is yet to be sired that I believe would beat Big Red on grass.

Question: Why isn’t Man O’War is not on your list? He was good on grass and could get the distance as he did when he won the Lawrence Realization States at 1-5/8 miles.

Good, but Allez France was better.

I remember Allez France, though for horses that ran NA, I would go with Dahlia, she was one of the 1st females in my memory to ever run and beat males. She won the DC International, Can Intl and a race in California. All grade 1's, if she were racing today, people would think of her in Ouiji Board's stature, if not higher.

How about Round Table? Champion grass horse 3 years in a row and also HOY. His only weakness was soft turf. He was as tough and durable as any I have seen. Not too well known in the east, but they sure remember him in Chicago and SoCal. He earned close to $2 mil when that was a lot of money.

Then you forget Typecast and La Zanzara, both of whom beat males in G1 races in the 70s and could run forever. 1 1/2 miles would be no problem for either.

Typecast may be the best US based turf mare ever, considering how she beat males at distance of ground multiple times. (1972)

They could not write races long enough to suit La Zanzara.

Poll closes tomorrow!

Secretariat currently the 7-5 favorite. A bit surprising, but he was the 1973 Turf Champion off of 2 dominating races.
