$17,500 in 1975 is about $70,000 today.

1.2m is 4.85m though.

Actually just a small portion of that income as they syndicated for $14M upon his retirement. I have no idea how many shares they kept for themselves but he still made a boatload for the original $17,500 for the Taylors and Hills.

I think they kept half of Slew. Smart move.

If memory serves, John Henry was sold as a yearling for $1100, claimed/bought for $6250, then again for $25,000 before he went on to win the majority of his $6.5 million in earnings. Of course, as a gelding, he didn't make any dough after that except for maybe a "track appearance fee". Quite a bargain.

CURLIN was originally sold at the 2005 Keeneland September yearling sale for $57,000. He went on to win a few big races and stands to make a few dollars in stud fees. ...

For Bob and Beverly Lewis, this was a bargain.

I heard Frank Lyons on TVG once say that SSlew was probably influential in over 500million in purchases over the years. Between what he sired, and what they sired etc............That is amazing.........

Think of the influence of Bold Ruler

Secretariat's Sire, Seattle Slew's Grandsire ??? is that how you say that?

Plus all the revenue he generated for the Kentucky Horse Park.

Sunday Silence didn't meet his reserve at auction as a yearling. I think the reserve was 17,000. Then after multiple grade 1 wins, Arthur Hancock sells him to Japanese buyers where he becomes a very influential sire. No wonder Arthur's brother got Claiborne.

"bull" hancock had his choice of two foals once upon a time. that choice came about because the hancock stallion bold ruler had become so successful and popular, to get a breeding to him necessitated the submission of 2 mares of which the hancocks had approved the pedigree. after the live births, by agreement, the hancocks got the stud fee and their choice of one of the 2 foals.

one such transaction produced a classically marked filly, and a chestnut colt with 4 white feet.

after viewing these 2 babies, bull's opinion was something like the following, "what the hell would i do with that chestnut with the white feet? at least i can breed that filly!"

the classically marked filly that bull kept raced under the name "the bride" and i believe, never broke her maiden. that chestnut with the white feet that bull sent packing, raced under the name "secretariat" and the rest, as they say, was history.

Takeover Target anyone????
Bought for around US$1,000 by a taxi driver in 2004, went on to win in the region of $5.5m for the same owner.

Hell, you can't hardly buy a riding horse off the track for $1,000.

There appears to have been a Goods and Services tax of $250.00 on the purchase, but that earnings figure is astounding!

What a purchase.

The best to them both.
