Reading the letters to the DRF editor over the weekend, I came across a very interesting proposal for a permanent site for the Breeder's Cup.

A fellow wrote in that Atlantic City could be purchased by BC Ltd and then they could control EVERYTHING after sprucing it up....Problems solved.

Sounds like alot of money to spend for a 2 day meet a year. Don't forget that NJ has cut race days this year. Unless they could get the casino's aboard promising and influx of cash/buisness during a 2 week meet and in return get some cash to infuse into the racing, I'm guessing this has a zero percent chance of happening.

Good idea.

Add Hialeah to that list of possible sites. Hialeah has great weather and the best turf course.

It is nothing short of criminal that the finest and most beautiful course in the country is fading away. There is no place I would rather spend a winter day. Oh well, back to reality.

The iffy weather in late October, early November would never allow this be a permanent location.

As far as "spiffing up" the place...the first investment should be in a bulldozer.

Hialeah would make the perfect host site for the BC...if they MUST find a warm weather location...IMO, it'd be way more better than stupid CA...and it's a dirt surface!
But, until they get TB racing going again down there, I can't see them even in the hunt for a host date. I know Brunetti is trying his ass off to get a casino built and then get TB race dates...
man, having the BC at Hialeah would be perfect for me...I have family down there...and so many great memories of the good old days at Hialeah.

The idea of hosting in Jersey...well, IMO, may as well just have it at Belmont:)

Can anyone even conceive of the money brought in for one weekend with slots/racino in S. Florida and BC? Ka-Ching!

They'd get my money, I know that!!

But wouldn't either of the tracks I've designed be the most suitable possible permanent venue for the Breeders' Cup?

It could be built at the present site of Philadelphia Park, or in a state that does not currently have horse racing but would like to break into it with a big splash (Tennessee perhaps?).

Some place, please where there is not a 50% chance of off track. Wasn't having the Derby run in slop bad enough?

Agua Caliente would be the the way to go.

I'm sure it needs a little work and maybe a turf course but it would satisfy all the internationalists and they have great weather that time of year.

As a bonus can have the Greyhound Racing Breeders Cup at night because the dog track rolls out in front of the grandstand.

If it was good enough for Phar Lap it's good enough for the Breeders Cup.

Of course there's the drug wars and gun battles in the streets just about every day but ............... :D

I used to go down there quite a bit before 9-11 and never got sick once from food or water.

I have gotten sick down there from some bad beats and/or too much tequila. ;)

Too much tequila will make you sick any where:D ...I was making a joke about the water, andy:)

I've never been, never wanted to, and never will. I lived in Salinas, CA. for a few years...that is as close to Mexico I wanna get!!

One of the most exciting races of the modern era occurred over a sloppy Churchill main track. Do you also consider Personal Ensign's career finale "bad enough?"

Track condition is part of the game.

That being said, the BC definitely shouldn't set up permanent, or even semi permanent camp a a location where the time of year makes the weather questionable.

When discussing Hialeah, it was inevitable that the word "criminal" would find its way into a post.

a rotation between santa anita, belmont and gulfstream/hialeah and every fourth year a location is chosen to host say an Arlington or a Monmouth or a Lonestar.

No CD?

CD is obviously historic, but my experience of the Breeders' Cup at CD is that it is an ideal venue if one suffers from a phobia of open spaces, or is a pickpocket looking for a great place to bring in a haul.

I definitely agree with placing Santa Anita on the short list of the regular rotation.

I don't think Churchill mgmt. is going to just roll over and give the BC to Brunetti and Hialeah. In fact, I would bet on a life and death struggle between Calder and Hialeah for the event.

Competition is good. Alternate the BC every year between Calder and Hialeah. Miami is a great location with temperate weather in November (usually). Both tracks would deliver style and substance trying to beat what the other did the year before. It would be "EVENT" marketing to the max. And event marketing is what this sport needs desperately. Is that a surface related issue?
I agree with the idea of 4 revolving sites. Belmont, Churchill, Santa Anita or perferably Hollywood (just personal perference) and then a 4th rotated site such as Lone Star, Monmouth, Woodbine etc......

I have a novel idea for the Breeders' Cup: don't hold it for one year. The following will ensue:

Greg Avioloi will have no use;

Trainers will not know to which races they should point;

Eclipse Award voters will forget how to vote for champions; and

Internet Land posters will not be able to type, "(Fill-in-the-blank) did not show up for the biggest race of the year."

It would be chaos.

I would party like it's 1983.

Surface related? Not at all. I am not real big on the synthetics, but I don't hate them with a red-hot passion to the point where I would exclude (or include) a track just because it ran on one. It wouldn't bother me at all if the synthetics just sort of phased out of existence over time as surfaces need replacing.

I like your set of revolving tracks. I just really like that SA has so many places to walk around to and get good vantage points-- or at least close to the horses. I think it's a good venue for fans on a big day. (Oh yeah, and the weather.)

Sorry Claim, I misread your post. I thought that you were anti-SA. I have to admit, I'm kind of on the fence with SA reguarding the Poly (but that's a different argument for another time). I actually don't like the turf sprint down the hill. Too much going on their for first time horses there. I think there is a real advantage to horses that have ran down the hill before.
