For what it's worth, here's a list of the final quarter times in the Derby using the overhead camera and timeline editing. At worst they may be off by a couple hundreds of a second. Some horses were not visible at the quater pole or at the wire, so their times were not calculated.

Ice Box..............................26.02
Make Music for Me...............26.53
Super Saver.......................26.63
Paddy O'Prado.....................26.86
Lookin at Lucky...................26.92
Dublin................................27.33
Stately Victor.....................27.36
Mission Impazible.................27.70
Nobiles Promise....................27.73
Devil May Care....................28.50

Do you have Ice Box's final furlong time? I'd be interested to know what that was

Nice Work  very cool way of doing it.

for Ice Box I got a very similar 25.9 with my method, which involves determining velocity using the chart call and adjusting for beaten lengths at the "mile"(per length) and the "finish"(per photofinish) - and then averaging that velocity over 1320feet(2furlongs). Note-my method is weaker when the trip is of the stop-start variety and not a constant velocity. It also depends on accuracy of the chart caller(this is where trakus is awesome when available)

If the final quarter mile times for a couple of horses that weren't visible at the 1/4 pole are bugging you, let me know which ones and i can post it .

Just like the common "last line itis" when you look at that aspect of the race 9(final quarter), it is usually long over, PARTICULARLY at this distance that the majority of these animals will NEVER see again.

The thorograph maneuver is to cap this race as if it were 9 furlongs as well

Trips alter this extensively as well

Another aspect of final fractions, if a horse is well in the clear by the eighth pole the rider will not coax a horse much more.......Third fractions then become misleading as the race is over so why should the rider whip and coax an animal any more?

yes okay zil, but a) how often does it happen the horse is clear by open lengths and doesnt need to keep at them? Funny Cide, i guess not many others. and

b) most, or at least the front half of runners in the race are still competing for positions. Desourmoux not with standing.

Does anyone have an idea how much ground is lost between say winning handily and winning driving? My guess is 3-4 lengths at most but just a guess.

I would have thought Ice Box's final furlough would have been faster than the one from 1 mile to 1 1/8, he was blocked at the 1/8 pole but I guess he was almost stopped earlier in the stretch...

1m to 1 1/8 = 12.445

1 1/8 to finish line = 13.235

Final quarter = 25.68

Cratos you used a different methodology than DePalma. What method?

Cratos you used a different methodology than DePalma. What method?

I use a method in which a horse’s beaten length is variable with respect the final time or time at the point of call and I take into consideration nk, hd, and ns times based on a formula that I got from the old Morning Telegraph many, many years ago. Also I do everything by feet per 1/5 second in my calculation.

what is timeline editing?

Timeline editing is where the video is placed on a time line so it can be edited. The time line can be zeroed at any point and it will give you an exact length of the clip when you move it to another point.

What I did is zeroed each horse's nose at the quarter pole. I than just scrolled the video until the horse hit the finishe line. Since video on DVR's is recorded in 30 frames per second. The final time would come out to something like :27.17 The .17 must be multiplied by .033 to give the correct time. In this example it would be :27.561 rounded down to 27.56.

Since I am visually marking the nose on the quarter pole and the finish line and using the multiplier of .033, the time could be off by a one two two hundreths of a second.

The jockey is just a passenger. How can he influence the horse's speed?

Please don't confuse Zil with his own opinions when they aren't in the same thread.
