Each year I anxiously await the The Innisfree Farm’s Derby Journal. In Folsom, Louisiana, Tim Rice is a breeder of polo ponies and a damn fine writer.
His annual Derby Journal is 20% handicapping and 80% literature. The first twelve pages of this years edition are the delightful tale of the 1924 Derby winner: the Oklahoma-bred Black Gold. The Derby analysis, heavy on Mr. Rice’s background as a breeder, starts on page 13. Check it out!
