I say yes, with or without TOBA, HANA should, preferably with, get permission from HOF to produce free or at least inexpensive HOF horse and seperately trainer and jockey decks of playing cards for racing, non-profit, and general public distribution. Your opinion?
Can anyone post a sample madeup card on this thread? Thanks!

just curious, but i can't imagine many people really being interested in ordering these.

why would hana be involved in producing playing cards?

I'd add the mention of TOBA as well, since they can't license or in any way make these cards "official." Same goes for the HOF.

There is some market out there for this kind of stuff. I have gotten a poker dogs deck for Christmas a couple of times. I do not think they are going to end up in the hands of anyone who is not already into the sport. JMO

I would like to find out who has to authorize the licensing of jockey, trainer, or horse photos for these cards. I guess maybe the individual tracks own the photos taken in the winner's circle. In that case, I'm sorry I began this thread!
Why should hoorseplayers and racehorse owners care about increasing racing popularity? Because the industry is just waiting for their tracks to fold and taking whatever pay they can in the meantime in some cases. HANA and TOBA are as important national entites as any other, and owners run racing.
The face of the cards would look like tracing cards except have a suit and number or letter in 2 corners.
I am not talking just for retail sale- I am also thinking sponsorship, and with the expansion of the types of decks, a whole range of promotions and discounts for current and potential players acommpanying and within the decks.
Since card games are installed on every computer, and played at home and at casinos and online, some industry or sport should use the idea as an ultimate promotional tool. And someone will.
Within the last 24 hours I have thought of literally dozens of ways to use decks of trading-style playing cards to reach non-players and to get online players to the front gates of tracks and OTB's. The backs of the cards would have the H.A.N.A. and TOBA names and abbreviations, and a generic drawing of a race horse.
Usually within 1 year some of my ideas are lifted by entites, usually businesses, who use some aspect of it or an offshoot of it.
Most reconizably Red Bull, Trader Joe's, racing's Welfare and Summit, and Velasquez/Keeneland with a 1-day jockey HOF trading card giveaway. I do not know how the licensing specifically was obtained for that.

I guess I'm just not following here. What has TOBA to do with this? Is HANA partnered with TOBA for some reason?

As for licensing, I can't say I know for sure. I'd inquire with a lawyer regarding publicity rights.

H.A.N.A. has no relationship with TOBA or any other racing organization beyond that which is necessary in the pursuit of the mission statement:

H.A.N.A. is committed to giving horseplayers a voice. By banding together we can bring about change and compel the horseracing industry do something it has never done: actually listen to its customers. By making them aware of customer needs and wants we can motivate track management and horseman's groups to reverse course and start doing the things needed to bring the game of horseracing back to the prominence and greatness it so richly deserves.

Can you give examples of which horsemen's groups and what exactly (motivate) means in this context? Thanks!

“This Internet thing is interesting. Ebay is going crazy with people trading goods…… ****if we play our cards right****, price our game right for this new medium and offer it to everyone in a fresh way, we can be an Ebay for horse racing.”

What if we said that.

What if we chose to embrace a new technology, make a solid pricing and distribution plan, convince government what it can do for them and racing, and what it can do for the North American gambling economy.
Offshore wagering, ****online poker**** and betting exchanges are not going away; they are here to stay. As the writer above stated “market forces could not be resisted.”
A refernce "play our cards"? I wonder where HANA got that expression from?LOL!!

Winners circle photos are the property of the respective photographers. But there should be plenty of publicity photos available for current people and horses. Rights have expired on photos older than X years; I've forgotten what that number is.

Or would these be like the playing cards handed out in Iraq?

There seems to have been sets of trading cards over decades, but not many racing playing cards. Although I did not specify a price or price limit I assume even card-back sponsored giveaways to non-profits like senior centers, boys and girls clubs. colleges, etc. and a special card with codes to win big prizes when checked against codes displayed on HRTV, TVG, BC or TC telecasts may not be popular.
It would take a gigantic effort to distribute for instance, free or discounted decks of HOF, BC, TC, or state-bred at tracks, OTB's and liquor stores with the purchase of a DRF, even with a special card entitling free admission or parking, or other discounts. Online players may not respond even if able to download a coupon when depositing or withdrawing $, redeemable at the entrance of tracks and OTB's without going in; Current horseplayers may not be interested in passing out decks at non-profits when they get multiple decks for visits to tracks or OTB's.
Except mabye Stronach's racing businesses or NY OTB's may just be that desperate!LOL!!

What little I know about the collector "cards" business suggests that people who engage in buying/trading these things start out by being interested in the sport that the cards are representing. That said, isn't the problem in horse racing that it has done little to captivate a public following? And, in the absence of that public following, where would the demand for HOY or other themed horse racing cards come from? Broken-down horseplayers who have figured out that parting with $6 (or is it $7) for a form leaves them that much less to bet. Horseplayers want investments that come to maturity in a matter of minutes--not ten years from now, on eBay.

This story was found in the "Barn Notes" for Keeneland... I have no opinion here, just trying to shed light...

JOCKEY CARDS RETURN FOR 2010

After a more than a 10-year absence, jockey cards make their return at Keeneland.

The first series of 2010 jockey cards are on sale at the Keeneland gift shop and will also be sold at the Riders Up! karaoke benefit on Friday. Additionally, the cards will be given away during Saturday’s Breakfast with the Works. Jockeys will autograph cards during the program from 7-8:30 a.m.

“Racing needs to develop stars in various segments of the sport,” said Terry Meyocks, National Manager of the Jockeys’ Guild. “We are hopeful these cards will be part of that effort. The jockeys want to do their part to help grow the industry.”

Sponsored by Daily Racing Form, the first series consists of 61 cards, including 14 special edition Hall of Fame or Triple Crown winner cards with special gold foil borders. Among the featured jockeys are Robby Albarado, Garrett Gomez, Julien Leparoux and John Velazquez. Steve Cauthen, Pat Day, Angel Cordero, Jerry Bailey and Ron Turcotte are among the jockeys included in the Special Edition set.

“Racing fans of all ages can enjoy collecting the cards whether they are sports card collectors or kids using them to get autographs of their all-time favorite jockeys,” said Meyocks. “I’d like to thank Daily Racing Form for their sponsorship and ongoing efforts to promote the sport. I would also like to thank Keeneland for their continued support, cooperation and leadership in the industry. We look forward to working with our track partners to issue additional cards throughout the year.”

“Daily Racing Form is thrilled to lend its support to The Jockeys’ Guild as it re-introduces jockey trading cards. A core mission of ours is to promote Thoroughbred racing – and especially the stars of the sport,” said John Hartig, chief executive officer of Daily Racing Form. “The jockeys are incredible athletes and these cards will help introduce them to both current enthusiasts and a new generation of fans.”

DRF, who has many liquor store outlets, sponsored the latest trading cards. My idea was to get the 150 million Americans who already play cards to get or buy TBred racing playing cards with codes to tune into racing TC and BC TV and win prizes like from NTRA sponsors- new car, house painted, all new computer and office stuff, etc. They can buy a DRF of just their local or closest track and OTB locations and get a free deck of cards of HOF, TC, BC, or local stakes winners; local track- horse, jockey, and training leaders.
Maybe some non-profits like kids' organizations or jails or prisons would not like the idea. TOBA owners can put them in their other business waiting rooms.
Did Seabiscuit's owner ever do a car giveaway for those who entered a contest at his dealerships by writing their name and address on their losing betting slips and taking a test drive?
Again, "Bankrupt" Stronach can do a million tie-ins to HRTV, Xpress, his tracks, stables, horses. etc etc. as can Twin Spires.
But that involves thinking outside the box forwardly, involving minimum effort by everyone, and liking one of my ideas!!LOL!!
Meanwhile, card playing is making big inroads into horseracingjust through PA.

Tom also says he may or will play poker on Paceadvantage. Of course FTP is just trying give away poker money to horseplayers. I will probably play some too since both rely on simple arithmetic to win!
