Spectacular Bid is missing because of a "safety Pin" incident on his way to the Triple Crown with his loss in the Belmont.
How little things can effect history.... he is considered by many the best of all.

Delp thought it was but then he thought if he met Affirmed again, Bid would run by him.

Like I've asked you before: how did things turn out for 3YO Affirmed vs 4YO Seattle Slew?

Time to start PR about the "DOUBLE CROWN"!! Derby and Preakness! Same result, just better publicity for the winner of the 1st 2 legs! Then the Belmont can be part of the Triple Crown plus its own publicity as the "Greatest Longest Grade 1 race in TBred racing".

He is the best of all.
Affirmed toyed with him. Seattle Slew beat Affirmed twice, once legit, once when Affirmed's saddle slipped. In my book that makes SS the best.

For years Delp was very vocal on about the trip Ron gave the Bid,
He was quite unforgviving in his statements.
Honestly he and the Meyerhoff let Ron ride the mile an a half Belmont , when
he probably could have had the nation's best.
Would the Bid have won ? tough to say say if he was not up to the task
that day , but his trip was horrendous and Franklin new that.

Actually, Delp felt that Shoemaker should have quickened the pace vs Affirmed and thus turned it into a test of raw talent rather than guts. Delp divulged this to me several years back when, in the course of hustling our wv derby, I struck up a friendship with him on the phone.

The more I learned about the Meyerhoff's from farm people who looked after Bid, the more I understood what Delp did publicly.

Respect your opinion, but let's compare Affirmed (and Slew) to the FOUR year old and fully mature Spectacular Bid. THEN who gets 'toyed with?'

Yes, 4YO vs 3YO isn't a fair comparison.
Regarding the '79 JCGC, though, I don't think the ride had anything to do with the result. Nor was it a matter of "guts." Affirmed had a response for every advance that Bid made; even though the final margin was not big, not once did it ever look like Bid was going to beat him. Affirmed was simply the better horse that day.

But wasn't Seattle Slew a 4-year-old when he beat the then 3-year-old Affirmed, and Affirmed a 4-year-old when he beat the then 3-year-old Spectacular Bid?

Respect your opinion too MM. Unfortunately we'll never know as by the time Bid was 4, there were no horses the caliber of Affirmed or Seattle Slew around. He spent the year winning by many lengths against inferior competition and setting track records. The only horse that even warmed him up that year was the filly Glorious Song (I was at Monmouth that day, a very good filly but no Affirmed!). Then he had that publicity stunt walkover in the Woodward.
I guess it's more fashionable to go for the horse that was more brilliant when it didn't count (like those who claim Easy Goer was better than Sunday Silence), but give I'll take the gritty Affirmed over Bid.
PS Leave it to Delp to hint that Shoemaker got him beat!

3 year old Bid had no trouble beating the 4 year old General Assembly, it's which 4 year old you're running against that's the problem.
But wasn't Seattle Slew a 4-year-old when he beat the then 3-year-old Affirmed, and Affirmed a 4-year-old when he beat the then 3-year-old Spectacular Bid?
Yes, but I'm referring to Delp's suggestion that different jockey tactics would've altered the result on that specific day. On that point, I disagree quite strongly.
3 year old Bid had no trouble beating the 4 year old General Assembly, it's which 4 year old you're running against that's the problem.
Actually, Spectacular Bid and General Assembly were the same age.
