(CNN) -- More than a quarter of young adults are unable to meet physical requirements to join the military, creating a potential threat to national security, a group of retired armed forces leaders said Tuesday.

"It's not drug abuse, it's not asthma, it's not flat feet -- by far the leading medical reason is being overweight or obese," said retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Norman Seip at a news conference.

About 27 percent of young adults are medically ineligible for the military, according to Mission: Readiness, a group of retired admirals, generals, and other senior military leaders.

Mission: Readiness' report, "Too Fat to Fight," said that 75 percent of young Americans between the ages of 17 to 24 do not qualify for the military because of failure to graduate [from high school], criminal records or physical problems. The study cited Department of Defense and health data.

School systems food programs arent helping either. Check out Jamie Oliver's "Food Revolution". I guess kids need to be taught that going from a 9-piece chicken mcnugget to a 6-piece mcnugget isnt really considered dieting. :)

It isn't just the diet, although that stuff is like poison. There are no phys ed requirements any more in public schools. Kids don't go out and play in the afternoon, they sit in front of a tv or computer. Parents have to take control before it is too late. I am thankful our grandkids, (14 and 6) are getting enough exercise.

Way back in elementary school we just got a bat a ball and a glove and smacked a baseball to one another for hours on end, until we discovered ping pong and then did the same thing for hours chasing a different sized ball.

The atherosclerosis and diabetes incubating right now is going to be astounding...

Government schools are so worried about kids getting hurt either physically or emotionally, they don't get exercise, they get fresh air and that's about it.

The big these days is everything is organized. The good kids play. The fat kid who needs it rides the bench because the coach and the parents want to win. We used play touch football and never keep score, but then on offense always scored anyway.JMO

Patrents fault, schools fault, most likely both.

Just take yourself to your local school, after lunch. foods on the plate before luch and also after lunch, then foods gets thrown out.
50/70% is wasted

In grade school our favorite game was "tackle the man with the football". There was no scoring. It was just get the ball run as far as you can before 20 other kids jumped on you and knocked you down! Then you threw the ball up in the air and whoever caught it was the next target to try to kill !

It was great!

we called that game "smear the queer"...not quite politically correct I guess.

capture the flag, dodgeball, kickball. Recess was a lot of fun back in the day.

Except were wore uniforms at my school, blue corduroy pants. When you'd wipe out on the asphalt that corduroy would just disentegrate, and you'd get a hole in your pants your mom wasn't gonna be happy about, and big raspberry on your knee with blue fuzz embedded in it.

Who am I kidding, even that part was fun.

Anyone play Run British Bulldogs? You need a lot of kids-like 15 or so. Fourteen of them line up at one line with one guy in the middle. They all charge to the other line (40-50yds) while the guy in the middle tries to tackle one of them. Anyone he tackles is now on his team, and the rest line up and go again. Repeat until everyone is tackled...hell yeah!

Seriously though, America is fat because we eat crap. Look at the kid's menu at any major 'family' eatery...fried fried fried. Or should I say crispy? That's the new PC word for taking a deep deep dive way down into a tub of boiling grease, and hanging out for a few minutes before floating up. Hell, look at the normal adult menu at any major chain restaurant...garbage.

Root cause?

Parents not accepting the responsibility of raising their own children.
Who's in charge, the kid of the parent?

So, what's your point to this thread, Zil, other than the one on top of your head? Are you suggesting that the state should come in and confiscate these kids from their parents and whisk them off to Brown Shirt camps for a year to whip them into shape? Should legislation be passed to this effect?
What are you trying to say with this lame thread?

in this video the good doctor makes a convincing argument:
Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, explores the damage caused by sugary foods. He argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin.
he claims this epidemic is spreading worldwide as the use of high fructose corn syrup is spreading. childhood obesity is not just confined to the u.s. anymore. even japan is starting to see it.

yeah, recess always sparked a lot of physical activity. Here in Vegas kids don't get recess, probably that way everywhere.

When you go back a generation or two, you'd see kids playing baseball or football in the park. Now, the only time they play is in supervised leagues. Everyone is too busy with their video games. Go by the same parks and they are totally deserted.

Then they should be able to get in shape by running from the perverts.
A little incentive never hurts.
