Overall handle off 11%
Off track wagering down 8%
Out of state wagering down 13%
On track handle dropped 15%

Field size dropped from 8.2 to 7.9

Wagering was down 10.4% in the US for the first quarter.

It seems tracks with higher distribution fees are getting hurt the most. There has been a slight gravitational pull towards tracks that have lower distribution fees. that and the drop in field size probably accounted for out of state wagering to be higher than the national average.

On track handle has been dropping everywhere. Attendance was down only 6% so it can be concluded that the average a person at the track bet off was less.

Could Los Al's takeout rise hurt the every day live player? It is very possible. They had less to churn with. Takeout increases hurts live business first, and then spreads within the state and then nationally.

If Santa Anita didn't have to compete with the unexpected popularity of the Winter Olympics, I think handle would have been flat or possibly up.

I wouldn't have thought of it myself but the sharp as a tack Los Alamitos Quarter Horse Racing Association said it on their packet presented to the CHRB for it's takeout increase debate.......

"The post takeout increase period includes competition from the Olympics and more bad weather"

   I second this.

Lol Winter -- what ? OMFGROFLOL

Yea ... us horse players watch hours of ice skating and gay pushing rings into circles etc .... Hi-larious that someone would even attempt to contrive overlap between the demographics of Professional Bettors and (most-boring-possible-sports-event-ever:)Winter Olympics Viewing.

Hmmm, I did glance brifely at the Hockey game in-between my many bets at the OTB. Caused me to miss exactly 0 bets.

It gets even better. Ever been to the PAddock at Los Al (and take a whiff)? Heard what language is spoken predominantly there? Yeah ... these are the same ppl who watch the olympics. Genius.

I tried very HARD to get interested in Winter O this year....even brand new TV with dazzling picture didn't help...coverage was worse than your average ESPN, TVG, etc on H Racing. Which brings up the subject....more cudos to CD, inc for bringing Hi-def cameras to Calder RC!....these hi-def pictures are useful on Twinspires web site for members of course...the detail in them is staggering compared to a normal camera. However, it still begs the question, why does the use of already available tech lag so its its application? (3d tv comes to mind here as well)...I don't mean, hey, I don't see enough spears coming outta the screen at me, just the judicious use of already available tech. Carrying the TVGnetwork and HRTV in HD for cable and satellite users should have been completed almost simultaneously with the Churchill Downs high-def signal! (3) tracks now using high def...Cd, Fg and now Calder.

Oh well.....on track attendance is a thing of the past, embrace the future.

I've something to add to my post above...maybe if enough people were able to view the beauty of horses and racing through a tv that enhances rather than detracts, there MIGHT BE a few more people getting interested enough to make a visit to their local track....and ,,,a question for any 'international travelers' in our forums....

Is tv coverage of racing any better in Hong Kong, or in Australia, or Japan...by that I mean tv in high def outside the track itself?

when they first started simulcasing i used to walk into the simulcast book around 3:00 eastern to bet the last few at new york and play the california cards. now i start around noon, go to sleep around 4 and catch the nightime races unitl they close. i have to congradulate the fine people that run california racing, they finally figured out how to keep me away from betting there.

A dozen horses running on a split screen on a 17" TV or monitor at OTB's or the track vs. the sports bar TV showing closeups of goals, hitters, dunks, and trouchdown dances?!! Where are the 4' high head-on cameras and mics mounted on the ambulance?

I'm not surprised at all that betting totals are down at the just-concluded Santa Anita meet. Of course the unenlightened executives at Santa Anita will use a bunch of the usual alibis and excuses....bad weather, bad economy, competition from casinos etc...in other words, everything but the truth.

I quit betting Santa Anita mainly because of the unpredictability factor. Red ink results overall! I've found from actual experience, that making straight bets at tracks like Aqueduct, Penn National and even Turf Paradise, are much more predictable in terms of getting black ink results.

Then there is the problem of the lowlife dictators at TRACKNET
(dumb...dee...dumb...dumb.........dumb...dee...dum b...dumb...dumb) (parody of the Dragnet theme, with the letter 'b' added on purpose), who restrict availability of the Santa Anita signal in some cases (which lowers off track handle). Then there is the objectionable dictating by Tracknet to ADW's that they can't pay more than a 2% rebate on bets at their tracks. To heck with that noise! If I want to make a straight bet on a TRACKNET racetrack, I make it at an offshore racebook that gladly pays me a 5 % cash rebate. In my opinion, it should be none of TRACKNET'S business what cash rebate percentage ADW's pay their customers!

Field size dropped from 8.2 to 7.9

Partition the data between maiden and non-maiden and that 7.9 drops.
