It's official - they're out of fresh material & have been for a spell.
Took a peak @ some awards deal tonight. Not a good thing.
Or could it be this 'Modern Country' is the problem?

I got to tell you, I know Taylor Swift is popular and I appreciate her rise to the top, but I don't think her music if very good. Just like Miley Cirus, it just goes to show you how important marketing is to musical success.

You know you're right . Taylor has some nice dance moves , but the music isn't there . A ton of make-up and production means everything . Miley has seemed to have out grown her success with music and moved on to movies . I wish her well , but have my doubts with her as well .

I think mainstream country music radio has destroyed country music. Way too much young girl with young girl problems/dilemma stuff and washed-up pop performers looking to jump start slumping careers. They're all taking Alan Jackson's advice and "Gone Country".

I'd say you can blame crap like American Idol and its weekly popularity contest that acts as a cover to distract everyone from the lack of talent for the downfall of much of popular music in general, not just country.

Both hip hop and country music have both become shells of their former selves, as has rock music. The problem is that there is no passion anymore in most of it. Rap used to be written by guys who had actual struggles and grew up in real ghettos and had the cops messin with them. Now it's all about "i'm so great, i'm in the club, spendin dollars" Country used to be about real life and sad songs, now it's all hokey stuff about tractors or being 15 years old.
and rock music, forget about it. it's all the same. soft verse, loud angry chorus, angry guys who grew up and hate their parents.
the problem with rock music is none of them are heroin addicts anymore. you have to have some problems and pain to write great songs.
Earl Thomas Conley, where are you when we need you!

It's not just music, its Hollywood as well - at least on television. All these reality shows making stars out of such no-talents like Parris Hilton, the Kardashians etc. And its staggering as to how much money is involved. It seems like every Hollywood no talent flash in the pan is marketed up the wazu. They all have cloths lines, perfumes, CD's etc. They all saw how Mary Kate and Ashley made millions and are following suit.
Miley has seemed to have out grown her success with music and moved on to movies
Classic example number 2 (after Mary Kate and Ashley) a very mediocre talent that enjoyed unbelievable success and made a billion dollars for Disney all thanks to the influence of the Disney machine. She is on her way down now, you will see her in a few movies for a while because her name can still make money, but how many coming of age movies can one teen make, she's basically playing herself. Like Mary Kate and Ashley she will fade into the tabloids.
IMO, the queen bee of them all is Beyonce, not that she's a no talent, but I'm of the opinion that she's not all that. A classic example of what the Hollywood machine can do when it gets behind someone.

I think MTV also played a role, used to be you lived or died in the music industry due to the quality of your music. After MTV it became about how well your video promoted your song.

There is still plenty of good music out there, you just need to know where to find it. This bubble gum country is AWFUL.
Try listening to "Alt Country" or "Americana"
Lots of great singer/songwriters out there, many don't make the big time because they don't "fit in" in Nashville.

what country is missing is the real life pathos, and idiosyncratic story tellin' .
Mack - lala isnt showing up in my google results anymore as of this am, just ilike and rhapsody. I had a feeling Apple would shut down that relationship, too bad. I'm beginning to hate Apple.

I don't even know what country music is anymore. It used to be Willie, Waylon, and Hank... now it's N'Sync meets Kylie Minogue with the pluck of a banjo every forty seconds for good measure.
It sucks and has sucked ever since Achey Breaky Heart.

For years our local Minnesota public radio station played lots of liberal talk drivel and orchestra/opera music. But about 4 years ago they completely switched formats to a lot of independent and local music. They stream everything at:
http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/services/the_current/
The relaxation of federal regulation (limits on media ownership) has turned the radio industry in to one big commercial. All commercial driven music all the time (in all genres).
It's ironic that now the one station that generates anything interesting is the publicly funded station.
No wonder so many folks turn to Rush when the Twins are not on. :)

So there's two of us left, huh?

It is all about your perspective. I say country music went bad when cowboy movies, radio and TV shows stopped using classical music for their themes, like when "The Lone Ranger" used the "William Tell Overture" for its theme song! LOL!!
Here's one of my original lyrics-
" LYRICS C. 1983, 2009 BY KEN WOODALL
______________________________________
CABIN HIDEAWAY (Key of C?) Possibly C-F G progression?
On our wedding eve, you were so afraid. Stay with me always, please don't run away. Old times are the best, but stay for all time's sake. Then you said that you'ld love me every day.
(chorus) Follow me to my hideaway; I'll take your horse's reins and lead the way. We'll love all night and play all day, so follow to our hideaway.
Riding along, on an old narrow trail. With my new sweet bride, a true Southern belle. In the mist of a- cool Autumn night, just you and me, alone in moonlight.
(repeat chorus)
As we ride, to our cabin hideaway, I can feel the warmth- of your loving ways. Sixteen months now, I've known you very well, and precious love grows deeper every day.
(chorus) Follow me to our hideaway, I'll take your horse's reins and lead the way. To love all night and play all day, so follow to our hideaway. Follow to our hideaway, our cabin hideaway."

I've noticed that as well. My disdain for Apple has been intact for years. I encourage anyone I run into with an IPhone to jailbreak it right quick.
One performance I enjoyed from last night was that of Miranda Lambert. Or, as her guitar player coined her, "Boobs McGee"

great thread. Lots of great opines in here.
XmRadio, the Roadhouse is one of my favs. 40's 50's 60's and some 70's Country.
I miss the old stuff........Garth Brooks was the bridge to what passes for country now. I just wish someone would have blown the bridge up when he retired. Btw, some of Garth's stuff I thought was great.
Record companies and Radio steer the business.......that's who should be blamed. Death to record companies.
Continuing the theme of "Death to Record companies" I saw this gal on Youtube ....not so sure where her influences come from......the youtube thing is interesting......think what she would sound like with some decent studio gear, I like it.......

My dad used to tell me that there was no good country music made after 1977, and I think he was right. Waylon, Willie, Merle.
If I can find 'Are The Good Times Really Over For Good' I will post it here.
What a song:
Wish coke was still cola, and a joint was a bad place to be.

How come when I try to listen to a 60s station, 90% of what they play is the stuff I hated back then? Very little of the Stones or the Jefferson Airplane and lots of the Lemon Pipers and their ilk. JMO
