In re-reading a fascinating book, HEADLESS HORSEMEN by Jim Squires, he mentions a heretofore unknown detractor that is a known side effect of steroid use.

The mere augmentation of anabolism keeps fat stores to a minimum and one place where it is needed is between some of the long tendons to the legs where there is some buffering of the shock of each stride. These drugs almost eliminate all fat stores so this cushioning function is lost.

He goes on in detail of all the drug use in preparing young horses for sales that are nothing short of outrageous......

No wonder the business is in trouble top to bottom.
