Mike Pizzola calls his handicapping "managing para-mutual funds". I told my mom I'm gonna tell people I'm a "short term investment analyst" specializing in thoroughbreds. What do you guys/gals call it?

Gambling. You can fancy the name up all you want, but you are not going to change what people think. You are only fooling yourself. JMO

I dabble in the following:

Day Trading
Money Management
Money Trading
Mutuel (Mutual) Manager
Investing Partner
Investment Speculator

Once I told someone I was Punter and he asked me what team I played for. Was funny at the time.

But we all know what it really is.......

" Short term investment analyst"

I like it and think I'll steal it from you :)

I'm a little tired of the rolling eyes when I tell people what my second job is.

How many names have they come up with for welfare? They haven't fooled anyone yet.

Equine Investments. That implies horse ownership. The last thing I would want anyone to think was that I was dumb enough to own a race horse. JMO

The way my year is going, my job title should be, "Guy who gives all his money to other handicappers".

Agreed, when I talk to the old medical crowd they all shake their collective heads as if I was mainlining heroin.

I can't control what people think. But there's a fundamental objective difference between an activity where the result is not random, and it's possible to reliably detect and selectively target situations where the player is getting the better of the odds, as opposed to an activity where the outcome is governed totally by chance, and the probabilities are biased against the player on every single bet.

If you really must call yourself something try "WINNER". These fancy names make you sound like a loser. JMO

I like this one. Just change it to Mutuel Fund Manager. But instead of the 3% management fees, you get to charge 15 - 29%.

Do you not have anything better to do than sit in this thread and criticize?

Anything at all?

I generally describe it as "Losing My Ass" or "Making a Killing". It depends on the day.

There is at least a little irony to this.

I call it playing the horses. Why should I be ashamed of what I like to do? I don't dress in polyesther, I do bathe regularly, and I don't beg money off everyone around me or act in compulsive manners. People judge you anyway on silly stuff, so why make up some silly name for what I do? I also drink crappy beer, shoot pool, and watch baseball, have an MA in Economics, am learning Latin and Greek and work in a top level graduate school.

Anybody asks me, I like playing the horses.

You're right, but you can see how few people want to believe it is what you say it is. Hey, I've been grinding out a profit the past five years but I still call it gambling. :)
