This is the new Monmouth Park marketing slogan. Along with "don't be left at the gate". I like the 50 Million reasons slogan, now MP needs to advertise this on cable as well as a few billboards so people know there has been a change in the racing schedule and purse structure. Good job by the marketing department thus far.

I'm not quite sure how good a job they're doing so far. I received an email from the track today telling me, "The first condition book of the 2010 Monmouth Park season is now available online by CLICKING HERE."

Of course the book has been out for several days now.

I'm still adopting a wait and see attitude towards Monmouth's experimental season.

The fact that they are trying is a positive. I am glad they sent the condition book out to everyone in their database it gives everyone a heads up on the types of races they will have and the huge purses.

Reminds me of that Elvis album "50 Million Fans Can't Be Wrong" or something of that sort...

Word on street is Lowich leaving for TVG and track super retiring and they're hiring a "consultant" to run track maintenance. Top horses in the US and not a full time track super?

If its the "consultant" they've used before, the track will be in VERY VERY GOOD hands.

who are they marketing it to ? The horseplayers ? OR the owners/trainers ? This should have been sent to the latter group as it pertains to their interests, purses. Why should I be concerned about how much they're running for unless I stand to make $$.

Players rarely look at condition books , the marketing people are simply mirroring the websites as a topic being discussed . The horseplayers are interested in full fields vs 6 horse races with 3 2/1 shots running; they want nice juicy payouts and low takeouts. What else is new ? This is what they should be advertising to us . Am I missing something here ?

Don't get left at the gate ? a common racing phrase, here telling owners/trainers to get in on a good thing ? What does it pertain to horseplayers until there is evidence in results charts and payouts to prove the point ? Maybe the Pletchers , Levines, McLaughlins send over alot of low priced winners ? it will then be the locals who are left at the gate.

Sorry, I donot concur on the marketing slogans and intended audience .

My fellow co workers have been asking me many questions about the new racing schedule at Monmouth. They are very pleased as they will be able to cross Rt 36 much easier on Wednesday and Thursdays. The average Monmouth resident is concerend about traffic and Fort Monmouth closing not the condition book.

Last year I left my friendly confines of the clubhouse teletheartre to venture to the grandstand on seafood festival day. I stayed 45 minutes and saw 3 people with programs and only 1 with a racing form. Sure they can market the place but how will their handle be doubled?

Me I have other concerns.

I don't mind being screwed by the Big M Club's new rates but don't insult my intellignece by telling me I am getting better rates.

Now that Monmouth will have 12 races a day not only should they have 2 pic 4 but rolling pick 3. Why is it whe the pick 4 starts they can't have a pic 3?

I heard there will be 3 twilight Fridays in July. Should be interesting to see if this will hurt the Meadowland Harness handle on some of their bigger nights of the season.

Valet parking raised to $10!

Arno- your comment on getting these "festival goers" and what I call "picnic area freeloaders" to wager more is to me a critical issue. Now the track does virtually nothing to encourage these people to bet. They can't see the races, you can barely hear, they make no effort to help (e.g., roving bet takers). During the festivals the need a big screen out back. They need two big screens for the picnic area- one in the infield and maybe one other one close to the picnic area entrance. I've always thought they should charge more for the picnic area but get people to sign up for Big M club so for say every $50 they bet they get in for free. When you go to a casino nearly everyone is "rated", but at the track if you're in the picnic area you half to walk 1/2 mile to get your card. Nobody does it. It is crazy.

They won't double their handle with these people betting more. That needs to come from the players that have their backs to the track most of the time because they are watching NYRA. But these more casual players will help. It will be interesting to see where the per capita goes this year- last year I recall it being around $70 on track.

The condition book was sent to anyone with a current NJ owners/trainers license or who had been licensed in the past three years. Jeff Lowich is an asset to MP and I hope he stays.

Don't know if that is true, as I got the mailing as well as a friend;and we arenot owners/trainers. I think it was sent to whomever they have an email addy for as a mass mailing.

As far as doubling their handle, it will only come through simulcasting sources , just like Tampa did, except it took them a few years of Stronach/Gulfstream alienating their core audience to do it. It doesn't happen overnite as Monmouth hopes, but I wish them the best in trying to change what was a dying meet.

PS - I think we both know that fridays ontrack will still be a ghost town as before, but simo $ will come in nibbling at NYRA handle.

They really need to pound the message home. Get the word out—great racing at a great track...

Friday Saturday & Sunday

Throw in a few giveaways and I can see 10,000-15,000 the norm on weekends and even more in the summer...

The best way is to give out some vouchers—something

I hate to be negative when it seems like Monmouth is putting forth effort, but I agree with almost everything you wrote....I think the Marketing department is geared towards the fan and that slogan would make me think more of some sort of giveaway they are having for the fans, not the Horsemen....not really sure what greater purses will mean to people but at least is it better than "Go Baby Go".....

Tracks still seem to miss the mark in terms of the bettors not at the track, who at this point in racing, are really the target audience. Also targeting the bettors with things would be a good idea. They would rather hear a slogan geared towards takeout and not bragging about how big the purses are......

I got the condition book too and I've never owned anything more than a hot dog in the stands. :)

With that said, I really hope this works for Monmouth, not just as an NJ resident but as someone who applauds them for having the guts to try something different. It's more than an hour drive from me, but I'll have to make a few trips this year to support the place.

Obviously a takeout decrease would be wonderful, but let's talk reality for a minute. Monmouth did was what possible to improve the quality of the racing. How on EARTH do you think they'd ever get a takeout decrease approved when the state is broke and they're run by the state? They had zero chance at that, so they tried to improve the quality of racing and increase handle that way. I am not saying it will work, but for all the bitching and moaning about racing, at least this track TRIED SOMETHING DIFFERENT. This is a situation when the tracks are just trying to survive, so they gave a new tactic a shot. That's a start in 2010...if handle actually goes up, then maybe you can hit the execs in charge with emails about lowering takeout. If it doesn't despite the large fields (hopefully), then racing is dead anyway, no matter the takeout.

I dont think they could takeout decrease through, either, but that doesnt keep me from thinking that it misses the mark, whether it be the state or the track. Like I said in my post, the effort is there and these days, your are right-that is something to be appreciated.

As far as the slogan goes, I always feel like in Marketing and Sales, you never want the target to say either "So What??" or misunderstand the message....I think both of these things could happen here, but like you said, at least they tried something.

If putting up the big money leads to big fields and bettors following, then you are right.....we will see. I do think the the "less is more" philosphy in terms of days will get a nice test drive and is a interesting idea. Overall, it is just refreshing to see a track have the sense to try something new.

I believe your previous point was it was sent only to trainers/owners and we were merely saying that it was not, that it was a mass mailing to all , and that it was misdirected in its audience receiving it. If I were an owner/trainer I'd be pumped to enter and win gobs of moola. Of course they had my email addy, but I'm not the target for $50 million in purses. I don't understand your sarcasm ? Then again owners/trainers might not jump for joy for a takeout reduction sent to them.

There is no sarcasm at all in my post just pointing out the obvious you don't need to give an email address to get a hotdog at MP. On another note my grandmother received the condition book also and she doesn't own a computer?:faint:

I hope the best for Monmouth Park. I like the new schedule as now not only Mon and Tuesday can I get first row parking but now on Wed and Thurs.

In the past Monmouth has been very fast to take the turf races off the turf.
The first day they take them off the green and the 10 horse fields are reuduced to 6 the internet player might say same old Monmouth and look elsewhere to play.

In fairness to the track super they baby the turf course so it can last the entire season. Hopefully they give the bettor plenty of time when and if they decide to cancel turf racing. Last year on Haskell day they should have cancelled the turf early in the morning instead they waited for a mishap to occur and then cancelled.

NYRA has cut purses that will send even more decent horses to MP where the fields will be full.
