Don't feel bad over this, there are way more horror stories, that can be told
In 1985, I was at the Breeders Cup and cancel a $5.00 bet on 2 horses , for a total of $10.00, that were from England. Both were 99-1, Guess what, one of the Won.
I blew $565.00 for a cup of soup at Santa Anita.

I'm trying to remember the 99-1 or higher shot that won in the 1985 BC. Off the top of my head, I remember Proud Truth, Pebbles, Cozzene and either Mogambo or Storm Cat in the Juvenile. I'm guessing Lukas won the Juvie Filly. Are you sure you aren't mixing it up with the 1993 BC (Arcangues)?

I personally would not have cancelled the wager maybe if the horse was acting up but not for a jock change. Horse cant run faster with a diffrent rider.

Did they have soup? They certainly did. In fact, many swear by the healing powers of the Manhattan Clam Chowder served at all NYRA tracks.
Although, if he puked that up, it would be an awful sight...

At Saratoga, I have buds that swear by that stuff . . . . even when the temperature is a sweltering 94 degrees. Its hilarious!
Hot as sin in August, and they're eating clam chowder; washing it down with a beer!! (Not my deal, I like New England, don't go for Manhattan.)

my buds are the same way. no matter how hot, they gotta have it. We have the best real chowda around that is right up the street, but these guys say it worth the 3 hour drive to to have a bowl of saratoga red chowder. 1st floor grandstand around the 1/8 pole isn't it ?mmm chowder
on a side note, my dad used to bring home a couple of glass bottles that he hand filled at the big red spring. i don't know which was worse, him trying to make me and my brother drink the water, or watching him down a big glass of it....yikes. for drinking that stuff, and going to saratoga from 1938 till 2001 (excluding WWII when he missed for 4 years while fighting in the South Pacific) he earned the right to have his ashes spread in the infield near the big lake amd GFW. My wife couldn't believe that people actually drink it after her initial foray to the red spring.

Not betting because of a jockey change is determined by the circumstances in my opinion.
For instance; the jock, especially true if a leading boy, has several mounts in the early races and one in the last race. If he/she takes off the last mount I don't bet it because I assume the jock didn't feel the horse was worth sitting around all day waiting for.
Did the jock take off other mounts? Maybe he got sick or whatever but if he took off his other mounts I will still bet.
In your case you say there was a race delay. This has happened to me more than once. If the scheduled jock takes the horse to the gate and then there is a delay for a jock change it's usually because the jock got hurt in the gate or, which is very unusual, the jock refuses to ride the horse. In the event of a late change at the gate I always bet the horse. I've had this happen numerous times and most of the time the horse has won.
I remember one many years ago where a jock refused to ride the horse and the horse won anyway.
If a leading jock takes off a horse in the last race for no apparent reason this is a throwout for me.
So it all depends on the reason for the change. ;)

This is good logic. I think that the question that i ask myself in situations like this is "how many people in the crowd actually know there is a jock change?"
There was a race recently at Golden Gate where Russell Baze took off a horse at the last second and the replacement rider was someone really bad, i though that not enough people are going to know this change was made...........since, ya know, it still had Russell listed to ride in the racing form and program. Tracks are not really all that vigilant at making bold announcements on late rider changes, especially Golden Gate.
If you stick with the original horse and accept the lesser rider, most times you won't be properly compensated because not enough people are 'getting off' that horse because of the negative rider switch.
