Maybe he thought it was a future book bet for the Queen's Plate.

Amazing stuff, odds went from 47/1 to 20/1 in one click.
His wife should hit him with a frying pan for that.
Sadly one of the dumbest moments I have ever seen in horse racing.
Maybe they let him keep that :1: saddlecloth they gave him to wear.

He was only allowed a win bet on a single horse

My weak attempt at a joke.

It was as dumb a promotion as I have seen in a long time. Hey, 10 grand on a 46 to 1 shot, make him a 20 to 1 shot. That will have gamblers flocking to the game.

At least it helped those that bet the winner.

Often I get frustrated when tracks dont do enough....then when they do things, I get even more frustrated with what they come up with.....

Hotep is a beautifully bred horse.
I was surprised ro see him back on dirt , he may fare
much better back in Canada on AW and grass.

Why not bet the winner instead? :bang:

Well, maybe some people missed it, but I got the feeling the bettor felt something for this horse. He does certainly have gorgeous breeding. Maybe he had a personal reason like the horse was born on his deceased wife's birthday or something.

If the horse had won, nobody would think he was an idiot. :D (Of course, most people didn't think MI would win this race either, or he wouldn't have paid $16.20 to win. )

I would NOT bet the chalk if I had this opportunity. I bet most people would

He should have bet a horse who had a good shot, not some stab in the dark.

He should have bet a horse who had a good shot, not some stab in the dark.If the guy really had MTB in the Derby, then it seems that his methodology or angle handicapping is longshot oriented, and maybe he thought his choice did have a good chance.

As far as the promotion goes, I would have rather seen them have 5 people make 2,000 bets instead of 1 larger bet. Then, there's probably a better chance of getting a winner to promote, but overall, I didn't mind it. If nothing else, I just looked at it as the track putting 10,000 of takeout (minus the takeout I guess, lol) back into the pools.

I wonder if that guy will get hit with a tax bill on that 10K, which was given to him to wager...?

If the horse won, like so many longshots have, this thread wouldn't exist. :D

Very interesting thought and it would really suck but since he had no option to either keep the money or bet it I would think he "won" nothing but an entry into the final step of the contest.

Interesting question. If I remember correctly he was never given the briefcase with the cash and he did not place the wager.
Don't recall if he was handed the ticket but if he did one could argue that it was nothing but a worthless piece of paper.
