This is an unbelievable black eye for all of horse racing and guess what, in the end, the fans/bettors/customers get the shaft for someone else's mistake.

JMHO, but wouldn't you think there would be backup systems for just such an event?

"I've never seen a race declared official and then, an hour and 20 minutes later, they decided to refund the money. And they don't even announce what they are doing."
[snip]

I’ve never seen that either. Why not tell the people what happened (something tracks hardly ever do) and to hold on to their tickets for as long as necessary until the thing can be sorted out? The only thing they didn't get was the last flash of the odds. That would be easy enough to guesstimate and if the track was a few thousand off in the players' favor (and they wouldn’t be) then the track (or more accurately, the tote company) takes the hit. No big deal. Instead, they piss off all of the legitimate winners by screwing them out of their winnings.

If it wasn't enough that Northlands and the Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency (CPMA) declared a full refund on the race an hour and 20 minutes after the race was declared official because of an AmTote malfunction that prevented the possibility of late money being entered into the 10th race pool then why were consolation payoffs made on the Win-3 and Daily Double pools?

There couldn't have been late money bet on those wagers. It's totally impossible. The Win-3 money was totally locked in after the 8th race, the Daily Double wagers were totally locked in after the 9th race. Northlands, AmTote and the CPMA know exactly what the payoffs on the those wagers were. Yet, they decided to pay consolation payoffs on both those bets. They paid $4.50 for a $2 Daily Double from the winner of the 9th race, a horse that paid $4.00, to all the horses in the 10th race. They did that even though winning $2 Daily Double tickets from the winner of the 9th race to the winner of the 10th race, a horse which went off at 12-1, were paying $113.60.

Comment: And it gets worse.

To my mind the biggest sin you can commit if you’re in the gambling business is to not pay off your winners.

I’ve been noticing for a long time this trend of rewarding losers at the expense of the winners. You see it everywhere. You see it in the betting rules, you see it in the way some payouts are done, the way purses are paid, etc. This undermines the game and it seems to be getting worse and worse. The way this latest tote thing was handled is a classic example.

The win 3 and DD should have been paid off. What are they thinking?

Indeed, what WERE they thinking???

Again, to be perfectly clear, there was no way either the Win-3 or Daily Double pools were 'compromised' or affected as Northlands and the CPMA said because all the money was in and totally accounted for. Those pools were already established. There is no way - no way - those wagers should have been refunded.

Now, let's see someone possibly try and explain that.

Yes, let’s.
