The local CFL team will play this season in the old Empire Stadium which is on the grounds of the Pacific National Exhibition adjoining Hastings. The roof at their stadium is being replaced with a removable one.

So the brain trust is altering several racing dates to "catch" the crowd from the game. One day in June we have to start at 10 AM first post and on another Friday at 4:45 PM

No wonder our PR team leader no longer works at a radio station here in town........

GET THEM HERE BECAUSE THEY WANT TO GO TO THE RACES, not via some entrapment philosophy.

No wonder we are losing patronage,,,,,,folks at the helm have NO IDEA what they are doing.

Does Hastings still report attendance figures?

from what you say, they are at least trying..no?

the biggest problem, if any, with racing, is the very fact that customers look at the Negative.

If they do they would be estimates as they no longer use counters at the door.

THEY have good crowds. The marketing baloney gets butts in the seats and I have been yelling to them: EDUCATE THE FANS!

As an experiment between races, for the last two years, I have walked through the crowd posing as a first timer and asking one of several questions;
1) Can you tell me, where on the track, the horses are at the 2nd call?
2) Can you tell me what is the difference among the terms, steadied, checked or taken up?
3) What is the difference between a number 4 or 5 shoe on the shoe board up there on the tote board?
4) Where is all the money bet in the exotics reported?
5) what is the take out on a bet here?

BLANK stares from those asked.

We have large business groups that come out and park themselves in a tent area near the 6.5 furlong chute. When I worked the gate camera I would often go there to get a drink between races and noticed how many of them (with disposable incomes) really wanted help in understanding what the heck was really going on and NO ONE was around. Pitiful you have a group there already, INTERESTED, and NO ONE comes to make sure they have a good enough time to come back ON THEIR OWN.

I proposed an education session or sessions and being a guide for these groups to mingle with them through a program advising them or what they wanted to know and giving them some perspective along with reviewing some of the bigger races which occurred elsewhere that day. I just met with the director of racing this morning and he wants me to turn in a formal proposal of just such a program, BUT knowing that the place is now managed by the casino people I am not holding my breath.

BUT it was really a lot of fun walking the shed row this morning. It is like no place I have ever been. It feels like wearing comfortable old shoes.

I won't make a habit of it, but I think I agree with your entire post. Good luck with the education program.

So you have 30,000 sports fans basically next door. If 1% of them come over, great. In my opinion, they'd be nuts not to give it a shot. Years ago, I used to walk from the races to the football game with hundreds of others. Might work, might not. They are doing the football radio show from the racetrack. Sounds like they are trying. Time to see something positive, instead of everything negative.
