Nope! But as everyone knows I have no love for synthetic surfaces. ;)

Me neither. I was willing to ignore it when it was not California. But then when the CHRB mandate was made, I thought it might be best to wait and see. Well, I did and I don't like it at all. A big mistake.

Geez! I would have never believed Turfway Park would have such a larger impact on the national handle.

Well, just remember, correlation is not causation.

Not to seem like I'm defending the introduction of synthetics to North American racing, but I thought the first meet with Polytrack was Turfway Fall 2005.

Yes, but the handle has not increased since the CALIFORNIA mandate in 2006. Actually, handle went up in 2005, the last full year of dirt in the Golden State. In addition 2006 saw the addition of Woodbine and Kenneland to the Polytrack menu.

Coincidence? I think not.

Fair Grounds' handle has fallen by about 25% this year. It's a dirt track. People are trying to blame that on synthetic surfaces in other jurisdictions?

The best thing a gambling game can have (for example, poker) is to show people that dumb guys and hot chicks can beat the game. Do you know how many young guys are playing poker because of these female poker players who are supposedly making a living playing the game?

Facts are a dangerous thing says the idiot who can't run a basic data query.

2006 racing handle started declining two years before casino gambling started to decline and the reason is 100% the synthetic surfaces.

Turfway Park, Florence, Ky. — Installed Polytrack for a reported $4.5 million for its 2005-06 season

Keeneland, Lexington, Ky. — Installed Polytrack for $8 million in fall 2006.

Woodbine, Toronto — Installed Polytrack for $10 million in fall 2006.

Hollywood Park, Inglewood, Calif. — Installed Cushion Track for $8 million in fall 2006.

Arlington Park, Arlington Heights, Ill. — Installed Polytrack for $10 million for meet that began May 4, 2007.

Del Mar, Del Mar, Calif. — Has installed Polytrack for $8 million for its meet that begins July 18, 2007.

Presque Isle Downs, Erie, Pa. — The new racetrack-casino will install Tapeta for its inaugural meet that begins Sept. 1, 2007.

Santa Anita Park, Arcadia. Calif. — Will install Cushion Track for $8 million for its fall 2007 meet.

Golden Gate Fields, Albany, Calif. — Will install Tapeta for $8 million for fall 2007 meet.

IT is all just a big coincidence.

I also love how TP got the deal, after the bullshit hype nonsense,
somehow WOX has pay over twice as much.

Not sure what you mean by this but the Martin thing and ensuing blockade of offshores was in 2005 and certainly had an effect.

The KEE 2006 meets are a measurable part of that decline as are all the initial California meets. People stopped betting that shit before they stopped betting anything else including church bingo and it is an obvious reason why racing handle started declining two years prior to gaming at large-

in 2005 a host of rebate shops were shut off the market.
How does that relate to rebates taking off? That is an obvious cause for lower handle.

The rebate shops that were shut off were bookies.

The rebate game began in earnest in 2004. This has caused the competition to get tougher and it has gotten tougher every year.

As the game gets tougher handle goes down.

I like 2001, maybe early 2002, to be labeled as high tide for the rebate game.

Let's me shift tack a second. Keeneland's SALES are down some 37% in the past 3 years. Can this be blamed on the synthetics too? Buying horses at auction for racing is directly driven by 2 things: can they make money on track and/or as a stallion/broodmare. I guess you could say that people change their buying habits in regards their ability on synthetics, but that seems like a minor factor. Over-inflated stud fees and resale prices is a much bigger part of it.

The bigger issue is that the industry is a luxury, and when the economy is in the crapper, luxuries are what people cut out first.

That would be incorrect. Understand that I am talking about "whale play" here.
